Mahindra Thar 5 Door To Offer 2WD Option

A couple of weeks ago, Mahindra launched the 2WD variants of the Thar 3 door at more affordable prices compared to the equivalent 4WD variants. Similarly, the Thar 5 door is likely to offer 2WD drivetrain for those who drive their cars mostly within confines of the city. A test unit of the Thar 5 door automatic was recently spotted without a 4WD mode selector, confirming the 2WD drivetrain for the upcoming SUV.

2023 Mahindra Thar 5-Door Exterior Details

Multiple spy shots have revealed the silhouette and key design elements of the upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-Door. The Indian SUV will boast increased length and wheelbase over the Thar 3-Door and also offer larger luggage loading capacity and interior space. In terms of design, the Thar 5 door will continue to feature round headlights, Mahindra’s signature grille with vertical slats, and external hinges for the hood release.

Around the side, the Thar 5-Door is likely to offer a new design for the 18-inch alloy wheels, accompanied by squared-off wheel arches and exposed hinges on the doors. The new spy shots also reveal the rear door handles, which are placed on the C-pillar rather than the doors. At the rear, the Thar 5-Door will continue to offer LED tail lights and a boot-mounted spare wheel.

2023 Mahindra Thar 5-Door Interior Details

We expect the Thar 5 door to offer a similar interior layout as the Thar 3-door. However, the Thar 5-door could include a few new features that could eventually find their way into the smaller Thar as well. Thanks to the increased length and wheelbase, the Thar 5-Door is likely to offer increased space, especially in the 2nd row. We also expect the Thar 5-Door to incorporate a traditional bench seat over the individual chairs in the 3-Door model. Furthermore, we won’t be surprised if Mahindra offer the option of 3-row seating with the Thar 5-Door.

2023 Mahindra Thar 5-Door Powertrain Details

In terms of powertrain, we expect the new Thar 5-Door to carry the same 2.2L turbo diesel and the 2.0L turbo petrol engine options as the Thar 3-Door. However, both engines could offer more power and torque than the Thar 3-Door to overcome the extra weight. Both engine options are likely to come with manual and automatic transmission options along with 2WD and 4WD drivetrains. In the Scorpio N, the 2.2L turbo diesel engine comes in 2 states of tune — 130PS and 175PS. We expect Mahindra to also offer the 200PS tune with the 2.0L turbo petrol engine.

2023 Mahindra Thar 5-Door Launch Details

Mahindra are likely to reveal the Thar 5 door in August 2023. The prices could also be revealed on the reveal day itself whereas deliveries could take a month or two from the day of unveiling. The upcoming Mahindra Thar 5 door will go up against the likes of the Force Gurkha 5 door.
