Tata Altroz Becomes Lone Ranger As Only Diesel Hatchback In India | V3Cars

A few years ago, cars equipped with diesel engines contributed a good chunk of sales, especially in the B2- and C-segment. However, several carmakers have discontinued their diesel engines and vehicles altogether as they are unlikely to pass the upcoming BS6 Phase 2 emission norms without expensive updates. Hence, it is quite surprising to note that the Tata Altroz is currently the only mass-market diesel hatchback on sale in India.

Tata Altroz Diesel — The Only Diesel Hatchback You Can Buy

A few years ago, we had several diesel hatchback options to choose from, such as the Ford Figo and Freestyle, the Maruti Suzuki Swift andIgnis, the Hyundai i10 and i20, among others. However, the aforementioned models have either been discontinued or about to go off the shelves. None of the arch rivals of the Altroz offer a diesel engine as of today.

Honda discontinued the diesel engine from the Jazz with the launch of its facelift. The Baleno lost its diesel engine in the BS4 era as the 1.25L diesel engine failed to comply with the emission standards. The Hyundai i20 was offered with a 1.5L diesel engine until recently but Hyundai have confirmed they will not update the hatchback’s 1.5L turbo diesel engine to comply with the upcoming emission norms. This leaves the Altroz as India’s only hatchback with a diesel engine.

The Tata Altroz comes with a 1.5L turbo diesel engine option. It now complies with the BS6 phase-2 and road driving emission (RDE) standards. In the Altroz, this engine produces 90PS of power at 4000rpm and 200Nm of torque between 1250rpm and 3000rpm. It comes with a 5-speed manual transmission only. With the update, Tata are likely to have improved the engine’s refinement levels as well as improved noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels.
