Maruti Suzuki Reveal Design Direction Of Fronx; Invested Rs. 900 Cr In Development | V3Cars
Maruti Suzuki have spent Rs. 900 crore in the development of the Fronx, the newest car in the company’s sub-4m SUV portfolio. It builds upon the proven Baleno hatchback and the similarities become obvious when you sit inside the Fronx. But a lot is different between the two.
Fronx follows Maruti Suzuki’s Nexa design language, and gets 3-element dual-function LED DRLs and tail lamp design. The car even shares the front-end design language with the bigger Grand Vitara from Nexa. While speaking with CV Raman, Maruti Suzuki’s CTO, we discovered that the headlamps-in-bumper approach helped them achieve the sleek top lamp design for a meaner front end style. This design decision nicely contrasts the big, bold grille of the Fronx.
As we discussed the design further with him, we learned that the Fronx’ rear pillar has a greater slope compared to the Baleno’s. That’s why the Fronx looks more stylish from the rear but has a 10-litre smaller boot than the Baleno. The rear section of the Fronx looks entirely different from that of the Baleno as the Fronx gets a completely new sheet metal design. Maruti Suzuki have adopted the now-popular connected tail lamp design on the Fronx to maintain that consistency in the front and rear design. Raman told us that making the car look upright from the front and rear was an important part of the design strategy as it gives the car an SUV-like appearance.

Maruti Suzuki have given the Fronx’ interior a two-tone black-brown treatment. This interior colour scheme, as per Maruti Suzuki’s research, goes well with SUV body style. Beige interior theme, on the other hand, gives the sedans a stately ambience, while bluish tones go well with youthful and practical hatchbacks.
Maruti Suzuki want to dominate the sub-4m SUV segment, and they’re leaving no stone unturned to gain leadership in this competitive space. Their SUV-style portfolio has the affordable S-Presso, then the more powerful and more premium Ignis. Then, they have the Brezza and Grand Vitara on the upper end. The Fronx perfectly bridges the gap between the Ignis and the Brezza for buyers who want a car with high ground clearance. Moreover, the Grand Vitara 4WD and the upcoming Jimny establish Maruti Suzuki as the true SUV manufacturer in India.
With the parallel reveal of the Fronx and the Jimny, Maruti Suzuki want to expand their SUV offerings. The Fronx will compete with affordable SUVs like the Tata Punch, Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger while serving as an alternative to hatchback and sedan buyers as well. On the more rugged side, the Jimny competes with the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha but also aims to appeal to the off-road side of the B2- and C-segment SUV buyers with its 4WD capability. While it won’t become the most expensive car in Maruti’s portfolio, CV Raman, Maruti Suzuki’s Chief Technical Officer told us that they want it to maintain an air of desirability and hold a higher aspirational value over 2WD SUVs.
