Maruti Suzuki Baleno Cross YTB Spotted On Test In Gurugram | V3Cars

Maruti Suzuki are currently testing the Baleno Cross and we spotted a test car in Gurugram recently. Codenamed the YTB, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno Cross is likely to be unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo in January.

It’s no secret that Maruti Suzuki will soon launch a small crossover, which will be positioned below the Brezza. While the Brezza comes with a 1.5L petrol engine, the Baleno Cross is likely to come with a 1.0L turbo petrol engine, which will place it in a lower tax slab than the Brezza. As you may know, cars under 4 metres in length powered by a petrol engine under 1.2L belong to a lower tax slab than sub-4m cars with petrol engines above 1.2L.

Currently, the Brezza is the only sub-compact SUV in the market with a 1.5L normal petrol engine whereas all its rivals come with either 1.0L turbo petrol, 1.2L turbo petrol or 1.2L normal petrol engines. The larger engine in the Brezza puts it in a higher tax slab than its rivals, which explains why it costs more than its rivals while offering fewer standout features.

The 1.0L turbo petrol engine which is likely to power the Baleno Cross is a familiar engine since it made its debut with the Baleno RS. In the Baleno RS, this engine put out 102PS of power and 150Nm of torque and it came with a 5-speed manual transmission. We expect the YTB to offer a similar power and torque output to go up against the Tata Punch, Nissan Magnite turbo and Renault Kiger turbo.

The spy shots of the Baleno-based SUV coupe reveal split LED headlamps and Maruti’s signature grille for its Nexa models. Like the upcoming Grand Vitara, we expect the new SUV coupe to feature 3-pot LED DRLs. The spy shots also reveal the sloping roofline of the upcoming Baleno Cross coupe-SUV.

While rumours suggest that the Maruti Suzuki will call their latest offering the Baleno Cross, we have shared our opinion as to why it wouldn’t be wise from Maruti Suzuki to do so. You can read that story by clicking here. As we have now closely inspected the spy shots, its safe to say that the YTB will be similar to the Baleno, apart from an obvious increase in ground clearance. The overall shape, dimensions and interiors feel and look similar to that of the Baleno. It remains to be seen how Maruti Suzuki position the YTB in the market, given how crowded the B2 segment is. When launched, we expect the Baleno Cross aka YTB to rival Tata Punch, Citroen C3, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite.
