Opinion — New Tata Nexon 2023 Powertrain/Engine-Transmission Combinations | V3Cars

In this article, we’ll provide a speculative list of the list of potential powertrain (engine + transmission) combinations to help you decide which one makes most sense for your needs and budget. Please note that this is based on the rumours and information available online about the Nexon as of September 1, 2023.

Tata Nexon Powertrain

Note: We will update this article once we get more information about the all-new Tata Nexon.

Upcoming Tata Nexon 2023 — Potential Engine-Transmission Combinations

The following engine transmission options are the pretty much confirmed for the Nexon 2023:

  • 1.2L Turbo Petrol-Manual (6-speed)
  • 1.5L Turbo Diesel-Manual (6-speed)
  • 1.5L Turbo Diesel-Automatic (AMT 6-speed)

These powertrains are already doing duty in the current Nexon. These will carry over with the new Nexon as well.

Based on the information currently available, we believe following engine transmission options are also likely to be on the menu for the 2023 Nexon new-gen buyers:

  • 1.2L Turbo Petrol-Automatic (DCT 7-speed)
  • 1.2L Turbo Petrol-Manual (5-speed)
  • 1.2L Turbo Petrol-Automatic (AMT 5-speed)

Now, let’s examine, in detail, why we think each of these powertrains are likely to debut with the next-generation Nexon.

1.2L Turbo Petrol-Automatic (DCT 7-speed)

This is a new powertrain option, which is likely to make its debut with the 2023 Nexon. Buyers in the Nexon’s price band expect a more refined and responsive automatic transmission and they’re willing to pay for it as well. Just look at the Brezza, which is selling in big numbers even though its torque converter automatic costs Rs. 1.50 lakh more than the manual. This is pretty expensive for the 6-speed TC automatic.

Venue, Sonet, Magnite and Kiger also offer a more premium CVT or DCT automatic. We believe that the Nexon’s more powerful petrol engine will also get a new 7-speed DCT. The current dual-clutch automatic in Tata’s portfolio is available with a 1.2L normal petrol engine in the Altroz. It’s a 6-speed DCT automatic transmission. This doesn’t seem adequate to handle the high, 170Nm torque of the Nexon turbo petrol. So, we’re expecting that the Nexon will get a new 7-speed DCT for the Nexon this time around.

Tata anyways have to bring a new DCT as they’re planning to bring a turbo petrol engine for the Safari and Harrier. This transmission could end up in those larger SUVs after proving its mettle in the less torquey Nexon turbo petrol.

1.2L Turbo Petrol-Manual (5-speed)

This powertrain combination is already available with the Altroz turbo petrol. Even though this is the same engine as the Nexon turbo petrol, it makes less power and torque — 110PS and 140Nm, to be precise. While this engine can make more power, the 5-speed transmission, which is also available in the Tiago, probably can’t handle that much torque.

This new, low powered version of the new Nexon petrol will help create another option for buyers who don’t mind a less powerful SUV for everyday city use. The Magnite, Kiger, Venue and Sonet also offer a base non-turbo petrol engine. Tata can maintain the turbocharger advantage with this engine. While they can also choose the 1.2L normal petrol for the Nexon’s base petrol engine, it’d not be enough to move the Nexon’s heavier curb weight. It already feels just about adequate for the Punch. So, a turbo petrol is a must for the Nexon. And a tried-and-tested engine is a great option to diversify the Nexon’s powertrain options. This engine will also help Tata bring the Nexon’s starting price down a bit making it more competitive with the rivals like the Venue and Sonet.

1.2L Turbo Petrol-Automatic (AMT 5-speed)

This powertrain currently doesn’t exist in Tata’s portfolio. However, this combination will make the Nexon a suitable choice for buyers who don’t frequently drive on the highways. Well, if you don’t drive on the highways, then you probably will have to deal with the city traffic, day in and day out. For this reason, offering the base turbo petrol engine of the Nexon 2023 with an affordable automatic transmission sounds like a solid plan. Time will tell if this will materialise or not.
