It’s Not A Plug-In Hybrid! It’s An EREV.
But here’s the kicker! The engine doesn’t drive the wheels. It’s a 2.0L turbocharged petrol generator, which charges the batteries.
BYD U8 Range
For regular city running though, the battery pack should be enough as it can go up to 180km according to the Chinese test cycle. For real-world usage in India, you can expect about 150km of range on a full charge. So, you can expect to drive it like an EV for most of the year without burning a drop of fuel.
Even when you have to go on a longer drive, you can choose to do it on electric power alone by charging it at rest stops. But if they don’t align with your rest time slots, then you can just top up the fuel tank and keep driving. Its battery pack is large enough that you will probably still get phenomenal mileage, considering the size of the car.
Starting off with a fully-charged battery and full tank of petrol (75 litres), BYD claim that it can go 1000km without fuel or electricity top up.
BYD U8 Dimensions & Specs
Speaking of size, the U8 measures 5319mm long and 1930mm tall and it sits on a wheelbase measuring 3050mm long. The U8 is almost as long as the S-Class. And in terms of performance, it can go from 0-100kmph in 3.6 seconds. After all, it has 4 electric motors, one driving each wheel. Not too long ago, this kind of performance was reserved for exotic cars and not ginormous bricks weighing 3500kg.
The electric motors alone deliver almost 1196PS of power with each axle contributing half of that. In terms of torque, the figure stands at 1280Nm, or 320Nm from each wheel motor. The engine is good for 272PS of power and the torque rating doesn’t matter in terms of performance because it’s not going to drive the car.
Among other features, the U8 gets top of the line ADAS hardware, which includes:
- Nvidia Drive Orin SoC
- 13 cameras
- 3 Lidars
- 12 ultrasonic radars
- 5 millimeter wave radars
BYD U8 Expected Price
In China, this luxurious full-size SUV costs around Rs. 1.30 crore. Should it go on sale in India, we can expect it to carry a price tag of around Rs. 1.50 - 2.0 crore.
