The launch of Tata Tiago EV with Long Range and Medium Range adds 2 more options for the Tiago buyer besides the Tiago petrol-manual, petrol-automatic and CNG-manual. We know that for city-driving, the Tiago EV is a good choice considering its low running cost and the convenience of an automatic transmission. However, in this article, we’ll try to find out if you should consider stretching your budget for the Tiago EV over the Tiago XZ Plus petrol-automatic. We’ll also look at how many kilometres you’d have to drive to recover the higher upfront cost for the Tiago EV.
Updated: We updated this article on March 10, 2023. In this update, we have fixed the fuel efficiency calculation error for the Tiago EV and included the latest prices of the Tiago electric and petrol-automatic. The final conclusion is based on the March 2023 ex-showroom prices of the two cars.
For this comparison, we’ll use the Tiago EV XZ Plus variant and Tiago XZ Plus petrol-automatic variant. Let’s start with the price comparison.

Among the most notable unique features the Tiago EV XZ Plus 3.3kW offers over the Tiago petrol-automatic XZA Plus variant are:
However, even the Tiago XZA Plus petrol-automatic has the following features, which aren’t available in the Tiago EV XZ Plus:
In this case, the Tiago EV XZ Plus and petrol XZA Plus automatic seem to balance out the value of the features. While the Tiago EV has more functional features, the Tiago petrol has high-value features like larger alloy wheels, which help it completely negate the value offered by the Tiago EV.

The Tiago EV still has to justify Rs. 3.96 lakh with its performance and lower running costs to make it a sensible upgrade over the Tiago petrol-automatic.

Now, the Tiago EV has to justify the Rs. 4.01 lakh price difference to warrant an upgrade over the Tiago petrol-automatic.
Note: Check your car’s fuel cost with Fuel Cost Calculator in India
In terms of fuel costs, the Tiago petrol-automatic has a mileage of 20.09kmpl. This results in a fuel cost of Rs. 4.83 per kilometre.
The Tiago EV Long-Range has a range of 315km from its 24kWh battery pack. This results in an efficiency figure of 13.13kmpu. This means that based on the official claims, you can drive the car for about 13.13km for every unit or kWh of electricity. At this efficiency, the Tiago EV will cost Rs. 0.76 for every kilometre you drive with the assumption that the electricity cost in your area is Rs. 10 per unit. You can accordingly use your estimated electricity cost to adjust the calculation for your usage.
With these figures in mind, we can see that the Tiago EV long-range saves Rs. 4.07 per kilometre compared to the Tiago petrol-automatic.
Since we have to recover Rs. 4.01 lakh, we can expect to breakeven this amount in running cost savings in about 98,500km.
With such a high km-to-breakeven figure for the Tiago EV XZ Plus over the Tiago XZA Plus petrol-automatic, we can’t recommend the Tiago EV XZ Plus variant for fuel savings. If you are an early adopter of new technology, then you can go ahead with the purchase. However, for most car buyers, the Tiago EV XZ Plus is not a suitable purchase because of its high km-to-breakeven figure.
Please note that we arrived at this figure after considering the performance, features, official mileage figures, automatic transmission advantage and March 2023 fuel prices in Delhi.
If per unit charge is rs 10, and one unit can take you 13.1km .. then the cost per km is not 1.31.. it's 0.77rs
What about the battery replacement cost? We need to calculate the cost of 7 lakhs divided by 160000 kms.
the Electricity Charge per Unit in Mumbai is less than 6 Rs . Precisely 5.04 only https://www.adanielectricity.com/-/media/Feature/ElectricityNew/Tariff/Latest-Tariff.pdf?la=en Kindly recalculate.
Comparing with ex-showroom prices doesn't make sense as there is no Road tax for EVs, which makes the gap between ev and petrol vehicle to come down. In the case of Tiago, the gap between EV (11.59 lakhs) and Petrol automatic (9.14 lakhs) on the road Hyderabad for XZ plus variant is only 2.45 lakhs. Also considering the fact that Tiago EV is preferred by the customers who often drive in city, the city mileage of Petrol automatic is around 11-13, the recovery of ev price is even less. Rough calculations based on the above points. Price difference - 2,50,000/- Petrol price per litre Hyderabad - 110/- Avg City mileage - 12 kmpl Recovery kms = (250000/110)x12 = 28000 kms.
The EV is profitable only for those having high daily commute. On an average half of the claimed range of their EV.
The maintenance cost for both variants has to be accounted for over the lifetime of the vehicle. Only fuel cost-based recommendation is okay but more research should have been done.
