The launch of Tata Tiago EV with Long Range and Medium Range adds 2 more options for the Tiago buyer besides the Tiago petrol-manual, petrol-automatic and CNG-manual. We know that for city-driving, the Tiago CNG is a good choice considering its low running costs. However, in this article, we’ll try to find out if you should consider stretching your budget for the Tiago EV for heavy usage. We’ll also look at how many kilometres you’d have to drive to recover the higher upfront cost for the Tiago EV.
Updated: We updated this article on March 10, 2023. In this update, we have fixed the fuel efficiency calculation error for the Tiago EV and included the latest prices of the Tiago electric and CNG variants. The final conclusion is based on the March 2023 ex-showroom prices of the two cars.
For this comparison, we’ll use the Tiago EV XT long-range variant and Tiago CNG XT variant. Let’s start with the price comparison.

While the upfront ex-showroom cost difference between the Tiago XT CNG and Tiago EV XT long-range stands at Rs. 2.97 lakh. It’s worth noting that the Tiago EV offers the convenience of an automatic transmission. The Tiago CNG is only available with a manual transmission. If we give an advantage of Rs. 70,000 to the Tiago EV for the convenience of an automatic transmission, then the price gap drops down to Rs. 2.27 lakh. You can adjust the price of the automatic transmission in your calculations based on your perceived value and the importance you give to an automatic transmission in city traffic driving.

Note: Check your car’s fuel cost with Fuel Cost Calculator in India
In terms of fuel costs, the Tiago CNG has a mileage of 26.49kmpkg. This results in a fuel cost of Rs. 3.0 per kilometre.
The Tiago EV Long-Range has a range of 315km from its 24kWh battery pack. This results in an efficiency figure of 13.13kmpu. This means, that based on the official claims, you can drive the car for about 13.13km for every unit or kWh of electricity. At this efficiency, the Tiago EV will cost Rs. 0.76 for every kilometre you drive with the assumption that the electricity cost in your area is Rs. 10 per unit. You can accordingly use your estimated electricity cost to adjust the calculation for your usage.
With these figures in mind, we can see that the Tiago EV long-range saves Rs. 2.24 per kilometre compared to the Tiago CNG.
Since we have to recover Rs. 1.95 lakh, we can expect to break even this amount in running cost savings in about 87,100km.
With such a high km-to-breakeven figure for the Tiago EV Long Range over the Tiago XT CNG, we can’t recommend the Tiago EV XT variant for fuel cost savings. If you are an early adopter of new technology, then you can go ahead with the purchase. However, for most car buyers, the Tiago EV XT Long Range is not a suitable purchase because of its high km-to-breakeven figure.
Please note that we arrived at this figure after considering the performance, features and automatic transmission advantage. If you don’t value these much, then the km-to-breakeven figure will be even higher.
Dear Mahesh Yadav, your data is incomplete, we cannot calculate vehicle cost at showroom price, there is no calculation RTO, After sales Services, Price hike of CNG in last couple of years in comparison of electricity units and its forecasting, Subsidies on Taxes, Loan Interest etc, Also Some state governments giving special benefits to EV consumers. If you calculate all the possible factors your 87100KM will definitely reduced by decent margin.
Consider subsidies which in case of Tiago XT LR is 1,50,000 while I'm commenting, game changes totally. EV is far better. Think of an off grid solar system with EV, for a daily commuter it is win win.
