Nissan X-Trail — Not Competing Trying To Chase The Fortuner

While speaking with V3Cars, the MD of Nissan India, Saurabh Vatsa, hinted that the X-Trail is not a competition for the Fortuner. This leads us to believe that the X-Trail, being a bit smaller, should fit below the Fortuner in terms of pricing. The Fortuner petrol-automatic starts around Rs. 35.0 lakh. This gives us a ceiling for our calculations.

Nissan X-Trail — Import Duties

Since the Nissan X-Trail is a fully-imported car, it should attract higher duties, which make a car almost twice as expensive. But, with the Fortuner segment out of the question in terms of competition, we should expect the X-Trail to cost at least Rs. 3.0 lakh less than the upper limit. This will help it maintain a sufficient enough gap for buyers to consider the X-Trail while keeping the Fortuner out of their considerations. An on-road gap of more than 10% cost will bring the Fortuner into the equation and that will make the X-Trail a flop from day-1.

Real Competition

Now let’s focus on the real competition of the Nissan X-Trail. And, those are the Toyota Hycross hybrid, Maruti Invicto hybrid, Mahindra XUV700 2WD and Tata Safari. However, compared to these cars, the X-Trail has fewer features. It doesn’t get power front seats, ADAS features and power boot lid. That should make the Nissan’s price tag of Rs. 30.0 - 32.0 lakh high but reasonable enough to buyers looking for a fuel efficient Japanese SUV.

But, there’s one more thing to consider. Nissan MD, Mr. Vatsa, seemed to radiate enough positivity about the X-Trail as if Nissan are expecting high volumes from the X-Trail. And to achieve high volumes, they would need an attractive price. Rs. 32.0 lakh, or even Rs. 31.99 lakh, doesn’t have the ring to it like Rs. 29.99 lakh or Rs. 29.90 lakh. Moreover, this price would bring the X-Trail under consideration of Safari, XUV700, Invicto and Hycross buyers. With the high real-world fuel efficiency and good performance from the engine, it certainly deserves a serious consideration.

Nissan X-Trail — Expected Price Summary

We expect the fully-loaded X-Trail variant to cost Rs. 30.0 lakh when it goes on sale. With this price, it can satisfactorily compete with the prime rivals. While it may not come close to them in terms of volumes, it certainly offers a unique proposition to D-segment SUV buyers.
