4th Gen Maruti Suzuki Swift, Dzire To Become Most Fuel-Efficient Cars In India | V3Cars
According to the latest reports, Maruti Suzuki are likely to equip the fourth generation Swift B1-segment hatchback and Dzire B2-segment sedan with strong hybrid petrol engines. The 3rd-gen Swift and Dzire went on sale in India in 2017 and are likely to get a generation update in 2024.
Equipping the Swift and Dzire with a strong hybrid powertrain will allow Maruti Suzuki to meet the needs of buyers looking for a more efficient car for high running. Earlier, the Swift and Dzire diesel were the preferred diesel cars in their respective segments for buyers who wanted a car with lower running costs. While the Swift CNG and Dzire CNG are currently great alternatives, the addition of a strong hybrid powertrain should allow both cars to offer impressive fuel efficiency without compromising performance and boot space.
Maruti Suzuki Swift And Dzire Strong Hybrid Powertrain Specs
Maruti Suzuki are yet to confirm whether the next-gen Swift and Dzire will indeed get a strong hybrid powertrain option. However, if it were to happen, we can safely assume that Maruti Suzuki will borrow the strong hybrid technology from their alliance partner Toyota. After all, Toyota have a lot of experience making reliable and efficient hybrid cars all over the world. In fact, we could expect both carmakers to co-develop the Swift and Dzire, just like they did with the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Hyryder that feature mild-hybrid petrol engines from Maruti and strong hybrid petrol engines from Toyota.
The latest media report suggests that the new strong hybrid powertrain will be a 3-cylinder unit, unlike the current 4-cylinder 1.2L K12C normal petrol engine that powers the current versions of the Swift and Dzire. In fact, even the strong hybrid engine that powers the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Hyryder is a 3-cylinder, Atkinson cycle engine developed by Toyota.

Swift And Dzire Strong Hybrid To Beat Current Fuel Efficiency Record?
The current record holder for the most fuel efficient petrol car is held by the 2nd-gen Celerio. It delivers 26kmpl with the 1.0L normal petrol engine and AMT automatic transmission. The latest media report, however, suggests that the Swift and Dzire Strong Hybrid will easily beat this figure by up to 10 - 15kmpl, which puts the potential fuel efficiency figure in the 35 - 40kmpl range.
The other advantage of offering the Swift and Dzire with a strong hybrid engine is it will help Maruti Suzuki achieve a higher CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) rating.

Swift, Dzire Strong Hybrid Unlikely To Be Cheap
If Maruti Suzuki equip the next-gen Swift and Dzire with a strong hybrid, we expect their prices to cross the current segment benchmarks. However, Maruti Suzuki are likely to keep offering normal petrol and CNG variants of both cars to keep their sticker prices low. While Maruti currently charge a premium of Rs. 95,000 for CNG variants of their petrol cars, we can expect this premium to double or even triple for the strong hybrid variants. That said, the higher efficiency should help greatly offset the upfront cost difference.
Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki are currently gearing up to launch the CNG variants of the 2022 Brezza and Grand Vitara. When launched, the Brezza will become the only subcompact SUV to offer a CNG option. Meanwhile, the Toyota Hyryder and Nexa Grand Vitara are about to become the only 2 CNG cars in the C-SUV segment. Tata and Kia are also reportedly working on CNG versions of the Nexon and Sonet, respectively. Kia are also likely to equip the Carens with a CNG bi-fuel option to compete with the XL6, which recently got the factory-fit CNG option.
