Maruti Suzuki XL6 & Ertiga Won’t Get 6 Airbags – Here’s Why | V3Cars

At the media drive of the XL6, we got in touch with the engineers behind the development of the 2022 XL6 to understand various aspects of the updated family mover. When we asked them why the XL6 and Ertiga lack 6 airbags whereas the new Baleno gets 6 airbags in two of its four variants, we got an insightful answer. Read on to know the reason.

Maruti Suzuki XL6

Mr. C.V. Raman, the Chief Technical Officer (CFO) of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, told us that to incorporate curtain airbags in the XL6 and the Ertiga, they would have had to re-engineer the body in white and make structural changes to the MUVs. The whole process is rather time-consuming, and not to mention, expensive too! Since this is the first mid-cycle facelift for both the people movers - a minor one at that - it would not have been feasible to make all the structural changes while keeping their prices in check.

Hence, we can confirm that both the XL6 and Ertiga will not get curtain airbags, at least in their current generation. Meanwhile, the latest amendment to safety regulations which makes 6 airbags mandatory on all cars will go into effect in October 2022. However, it won’t affect the XL6 or the Eritga as both the models aren’t new from the ground up. The standardisation of six airbags for current cars will come into effect at a later date, which is yet to be revealed by the authorities.

While the Ertiga gets four airbags only in its top-spec ZXI+ variant, the XL6 comes equipped with four airbags as standard across all variants. Other standard safety features in the XL6 include electronic stability program, reverse parking sensors, hill hold control, ISOFIX child seat anchorages and seatbelt pretensioners.
