Maruti Nexa Fronx’ Localised 1.0L Turbo Petrol Engine Not For Brezza | V3Cars
Maruti Suzuki just got its 1.0L turbo-petrol engine back in the Indian market with the Fronx. The carmaker introduced this engine in the previous-gen Baleno a few years back. Maruti Suzuki also plan to export the Fronx from India with Maruti Suzuki’s 1.5L petrol engine. Given the cross compatibility of 1.5L and 1.0L turbo engines in the Fronx, it is possible for Maruti Suzuki to have the 1.0L turbo-petrol engine in the Brezza too.
With this smaller (but more torquey) engine, Brezza can qualify in India as a ‘small car’, much like its rivals. The Venue, Sonet, XUV300, Nexon, Kiger and Magnite already offer a sub-1.2L turbo petrol engine and allow bigger margins for the respective carmakers. Choosing the 1.0L turbo petrol engine for the Brezza will allow Maruti Suzuki to cut down on the taxes and choose to pass on some of that benefit to the customers with a lower price tag or improve their own profits. A win-win situation for the brand.
Back when Maruti Suzuki offered the 1.0L turbo-petrol engine in the Baleno, this engine was imported in India, so it did not make sense to offer it in the Brezza. But now Maruti Suzuki are producing this engine locally, and offering it in the Brezza can help them with better economies of scale.
But none of this is happening. In a recent conversation with V3Cars, Maruti Suzuki’s Chief Technical Officer, CV Raman, denied the introduction of this engine in Brezza. He told V3Cars that the 1.5L petrol engine is bigger (displacement-wise), and that is what the buyers want in the segment.
While Maruti Suzuki are currently tight lipped about the cars that will eventually get the 1.0L turbo-petrol engine, we think the carmaker will certainly bring it in its smaller cars like the Swift and Dzire at least as an option in higher variants.
