The next-gen Hyundai Elite i20 is available with 1.2-litre normal petrol and a 1.0L Turbo petrol engine. The turbo petrol engine is available with and without a mild hybrid system. Just like in the Venue, the turbo petrol engine is available with a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. The normal petrol engine is available with a 6-speed manual transmission only and is power and torque output are higher than before.
The non-hybrid version of the turbo petrol engine makes 100PS power like the Aura and Nios but the hybrid variant is available in both, 100 and 120PS flavours. Besides the 7-speed DCT, this engine is also available with the 6-speed IMT (which is a manual transmission with automated clutch). The hybrid turbo petrol engines aren’t available with a 3-pedal manual transmission.
For the Indian market, we can expect the car to come with the 1.2-litre normal petrol engine or the 1.0-litre 100PS turbo petrol engine or both. Kia Sonet is getting the IMT transmission right from day 1. If it sees enough success, then we can expect the next-gen i20 to get the 100PS hybrid engine with clutchless, 2-pedal manual transmission.
Considering that Hyundai is offering a diesel engine in most cars despite BS6 regulations, it’s safe to assume that the i20 will also get one. In the B2 hatchback segment, the Altroz and Figo offer a powerful 1.5-litre diesel engine. Hyundai also has a 1.5L diesel in its portfolio and we can expect it to make its way to the 2021 i20. Although it’s way torquier than what’s required for a small car like the i20, Hyundai may bite the bullet and charge a healthy premium for it. Just like the Venue, we can expect it to make 100PS of power and 240Nm of torque and come with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Hyundai Elite i20 is not underpowered for normal drivers. With the turbo petrol engine, the Elite i20 will become the most powerful car in its segment. If it gets the hybrid, then with the IMT, it could also become the most fuel-efficient car toppling the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. In case of the diesel engine, it’ll be a very powerful and torquey car with segment-topping figures.
Hyundai Elite i20 turbo petrol gets a 1.0L, 3-cylinder, turbocharged engine. The Elite i20’s normal petrol engine is a 1.2L, 4-cylinder motor. The 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine has 4 cylinders.
