In this October 2022 cars sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change in sales figures for each carmaker, segment and body style in India. Where applicable, we’ll also include our observations based on the sales data and possible reasons behind a massive increase or drop in sales.

Brand-Wise October 2022 Car Sales - YoY Change

  • In terms of percentage, Citroen posted the best YoY improvement of 1767% because of the low numbers in October 2021. It is worth noting that Citroen is not yet a mass volume manufacturer in India.
  • Among the mass volume carmakers, Mahindra posted the best growth in October YoY comparison, with a 60.86% rise in sales.
  • MG posted the second best YoY growth of around 52%.
  • The only losers were Nissan, Jeep and Renault with 15.42%, 14% and 12.7% decline in YoY dispatch numbers in October, respectively.
  • Most brands posted a healthy YoY gain in dispatch numbers
  • Datsun as a brand stopped producing cars over the past year.

Brand-Wise October 2022 Car Sales - MoM Change

  • In terms of MoM change, 10 out of 14 brands saw a decline in sales in October over September 2022. The remaining 4 saw a growth or remained fairly consistent in dispatch numbers as the previous month.
  • Toyota were the top loser with a 17% lower MoM dispatch figure.
  • MG were the top MoM gainer, with a 13% growth.

Segment-Wise October 2022 Car Sales - YoY Change

  • In terms of YoY change, the B1-segment was the biggest gainer for the second month, posting a YoY growth of 61%. The B1-segment was followed by the D1-segment, with a YoY growth of 47.52% in October 2022
  • In terms of YoY comparison, all segments witnessed growth except the A-segment, which remained consistent with the previous month.

Segment-Wise October 2022 Car Sales - MoM Change

  • In term of MoM comparison for the month of October, 4 of the 6 segments saw a decline in their sales figures
  • Amongst the falling segments, D2-segment sales dropped by 25.56%, followed by A-segment with 19.48% fall, 16% fall for D1-segment and 5.38% fall for the B2-segment in October MoM comparison
  • The C-segment saw a gain of 9.61% in terms of MoM change and was the top-gaining segment. B1-segment saw 0.72% gain in October MoM comparison analysis

Body-Wise October 2022 Car Sales - YoY Change

  • Sedans witnessed the biggest YoY growth of roughly 56% in October 2022 compared to October 2021
  • The SUV was the best-selling body style in India. It was closely followed by hatchbacks
  • All body-styles’ sales were up in the past year, starting October 2021, except MPVs, which saw a decline of 6.27%

Body-Wise October 2022 Car Sales - MoM Change

  • In the MoM comparison for October 2022, only sedans witnessed any growth in sales with an increase of 15.13%.
  • MPVs were the biggest losers with 15.07% decrease in sales.
  • Pickups are not a popular body-style among Indian buyers and it is evident from the numbers. Only 2 pickups were sold in the month of September whereas 75 units were sold in October to record a gain of 3650% increase in sales.
