Mahindra XUV 3XO Manual Variants Miss Out On Adaptive Cruise Control | V3Cars

Last week, Mahindra launched the XUV 3XO with prices starting at Rs. 7.49 lakh. Chief among the new features in the 2024 XUV 3XO is Level 2 ADAS, which is offered in the AX5 Luxury and AX7 Luxury variants powered by Mahindra’s 1.2L direct injection turbo petrol engine. However, the manual variants of the AX5 Luxury and AX7 Luxury miss out on 2 crucial features – adaptive cruise control and smart pilot assist. The latter essentially combines adaptive cruise control with lane keeping assist and auto emergency braking for a safe yet relaxing drive on the highway.

Why Mahindra XUV 3XO Turbo Petrol Lacks Adaptive Cruise Control

Before we look at the possible reasons why the Mahindra XUV 3XO turbo petrol-manual variants lack adaptive cruise control, let’s take a look at how this feature works. Adaptive cruise control, or ACC, is an advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) that automates some aspects of speed control on your car.  Imagine you're on a highway;  with ACC engaged, you set your desired cruising speed.  The car's sensors and cameras then monitor the vehicle in front of you and automatically adjust your speed to maintain a safe following distance.

Now here are the possible reasons why the Mahindra XUV 3XO turbo petrol-manual variants lack ACC:

Lack of gear management: ACC works by adjusting speed to maintain a set distance from the car in front. This can involve slowing down the car. In an automatic transmission, the car simply reduces engine power and downshifts if needed. A manual car can't adjust gears on its own, and engine braking in a high gear wouldn't slow the car enough. For smooth operation, the car would need to clutch and downshift, which Mahindra’s technology for ACC can't do.

Stop-and-Go Traffic: One of the benefits of ACC is its ability to handle stop-and-go traffic. The car can come to a complete stop and then restart when traffic moves again. This requires the car to manage the clutch and gas pedal, something the XUV 3XO turbo petrol-manual can't currently do.

While Mahindra are not offering adaptive cruise control with the turbo petrol-manual variants of their B2-segment SUV, Honda offer the City normal petrol-manual with adaptive cruise control. Additionally, the City hybrid, which comes with an eCVT automatic transmission, also offers the ability to handle stop-and-go traffic with adaptive cruise control engaged.
