Exclusive: Mercedes Concept CLA Class Battery Capacity (Upcoming Entry-Level Mercedes Electric Car) | V3Cars

Mercedes Benz recently showed off the Concept CLA Class, their upcoming small electric car, at the 2025 Mobility Expo. Being an early stage concept, the car has some extremely futuristic designs and trippy details like the aerodynamic chrome alloy wheels and twinkling 3-pointed stars on the grille.

While they have revealed some information about the specs of the car but they haven’t divulged all the details. For instance, they haven’t yet confirmed the battery capacity of the CLA electric car. In this article, we’ll look at the available information and analyse them, V3 style, to figure out the battery capacity.

Let’s first get the facts straight to see what we’re working with:

  1. MB have confirmed that the car will deliver a range of ‘more than’ 750km
  2. The CLA Class Concept electric car will have an efficiency of 93% in delivering power from battery to the wheels
  3. The car will have an energy consumption of 12kWh per 100km

12kWh or 12 units of electricity to cover 100km means it’s a mileage of 8.33kmpu (100km/12kWh).

93% efficiency means the figure of 8.33kmpu is 93% of what the actual consumption is going to be like. To make something that’s 93 percent a full round figure of 100 percent, we have to add another 7.53% of 93 to it. So, to find out the actual power consumption, we have to add 7.53% to 8.33kmpu, which is 8.96kmpu (rounded off to 2 decimal places).

With an effective mileage of 8.96kmpu and a range of 750km, you get a total battery capacity of 83.71kWh. Since Mercedes Benz are claiming to offer more than 750km of range, we can expect the actual battery capacity to be a little higher and closer to a round figure like 85kWh.

Hence proved!

At least one of the versions of the upcoming Mercedes Benz Concept CLA Class electric sedan will be 85kWh. Or something very close to that.

Other Small But Significant Things About The CLA Class Concept

Mercedes have also confirmed 2 things that are quite interesting about their upcoming electric car:

  1. The CLA will get 2 battery chemistry options: While other EV makers have also used various battery chemistries, the decision has been usually market or supply dependent. Merc, however, will give the buyers the option to decide which chemistry they prefer.
  2. The CLA electric sedan will get a multi-speed transmission: Currently, in India, the most affordable EV with a 2-speed transmission is in the VW Group portfolio — the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron. Both of them cost close to 2 crore on-road. We expect the CLA EV to cost around Rs. 50.0 - 60.0 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. At this price, this will become the most affordable EV with a multi-speed transmission. This will also help it deliver a mileage that’s comparable with an affordable EV like the Tata Nexon while offering very high performance and features. Especially on the highways and expressways, the CLA will probably outshine any other more affordable EV option when it goes on sale in India, possibly around late 2026 or early 2027.
