Maruti Suzuki Evaluating Jimny’s India Launch | V3Cars

Maruti Suzuki showcased the Jimny SUV at the 2020 Auto Expo and since then there has been a lot of buzz around the SUV’s India launch. While all this time, the carmaker has been tightlipped about its plans on bringing the 3-door SUV to India, there is an official confirmation about the SUV being evaluated for its India launch.

Talking at an investor call, Shashank Srivastava, Director (Marketing and Sales) Maruti Suzuki India, reportedly said, “ We are currently evaluating whether the feasibility of it being launched in the domestic market. As you may recall, we had shown this Jimny at the Auto Expo in February 2020, and we got some really nice response. And we are currently studying the various aspects of the marketing as to when, if at all, we can launch that vehicle in India."

For the uninitiated, Maruti is already manufacturing the 3-door Jimny at its Gurugram facility for Latin America, the Middle East and African markets. Maruti is also said to be working on a 5-door version of the Jimny for the local market which is expected to debut later this year or early 2022.

The Suzuki Jimny is a petrol-only offering. It is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine that makes 105PS and 138Nm paired to a 5-speed MT or a 4-speed torque converter automatic. It is the same engine-transmission combination that is being offered on the Ciaz, Ertiga, XL6, Vitara Brezza and the S-Cross. The Jimny also gets a proper 4WD system with a low range gearbox.

Despite being serious off-roader, the Jimny does not misses out on modern comfort features like auto AC, tilt-adjustable steering, height-adjustable driver’s seat, auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For safety, it gets dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, electronic stability control, traction control and hill hold assist.

If launched in India, the 3-door Jimny will take on the Mahindra Thar. The 5-door Jimny, on the other hand, will compete with the 5-door Thar which is also said to be under development.
