Mahindra Thar 5 Door Launch Likely In 2024

As per a new report, Mahindra’s executive director and CEO of auto and farm sector — Rajesh Jejurikar — confirmed that the launch of the Thar 5 door will take place in 2024. This decision will break Mahindra’s cycle of launching one new product every year, which they have been following since the launch of the Thar 3 door. Since the launch of the Thar 5 door is now postponed to 2024, we do not expect the SUV-maker to host any big SUV launches in 2023.

2023 Mahindra Thar 5 Door Exterior Details

Multiple spy shots of the Thar 5 door revealed its silhouette and key design elements. The Indian SUV will boast increased length and wheelbase over the Thar 3 door and also offer larger luggage loading capacity and interior space. In terms of design, the Thar 5 door will continue to feature round headlights, Mahindra’s signature grille with vertical slats, and external hinges for the hood release.

Around the side, the Thar 5 door is likely to offer a new design for the 18-inch alloy wheels, accompanied by squared-off wheel arches and exposed hinges on the doors. The new spy shots also reveal the rear door handles, which are placed on the C-pillar rather than under the windowline. At the rear, the Thar 5 door will continue to offer LED tail lights and a boot-mounted spare wheel.

2023 Mahindra Thar 5 Door Interior Details

We expect the Thar 5 door to offer a similar interior layout as the Thar 3 door. However, the Thar 5 door could include a few new features that could eventually find their way into the smaller Thar as well. Thanks to the increased length and wheelbase, the Thar 5 door is likely to offer increased space, especially in the 2nd row. We also expect the Thar 5 door to incorporate a traditional bench seat over the individual chairs in the 3 door model. Furthermore, we won’t be surprised if Mahindra offer the option of 3-row seating with the Thar 5 door.

2023 Mahindra Thar 5 Door Powertrain Details

In terms of powertrains, we expect the new Thar 5 door to carry the same 2.2L turbo diesel and the 2.0L turbo petrol engine options as the Thar 3 door. However, both engines could offer more power and torque than the Thar 3 door to overcome the extra weight. Both engine options are likely to come with manual and automatic transmission options along with 2WD and 4WD drivetrains. In the Scorpio N, the 2.2L turbo diesel engine comes in 2 states of tune — 130PS and 175PS. We expect Mahindra to also offer the 200PS tune with the 2.0L turbo petrol engine.
