Hybrid Unlikely In Maruti Suzuki Swift 2024 — Expected Engine Options | V3Cars
In this article, we’ll list out the possible engine-transmission combinations and powertrain options of the 2024 Swift from Maruti Suzuki. We’ll use the information available to us and our judgement to try and figure out the most likely engine options for the Swift 2024.
Base Engine Option
Naturally, the 1.2L normal petrol engine of the Swift will continue as is with the 2024 Swift as well. In the last update, the Swift has become more fuel efficient and it has also gained a few extra points in horsepower. This engine works well in the city and is a fairly capable highway cruiser as well. When you’re in the mood for some fun, it also revs freely to its redline and feels enjoyable when driven enthusiastically.
There’s no point in getting rid of this engine. So, we also expect the Swift to retain its 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT automatic transmission with the 2024 generation update.
CNG Bi-Fuel Engine Option
CNG powertrains have also gained popularity in recent years and Maruti Suzuki are leading the charge in this department. They own a substantial chunk of the CNG car market and we expect the Swift to continue with the CNG powertrain option even after the 2024 update.
Turbo Petrol Engine Option
Given the sporty handling characteristics of the Swift, the turbo petrol, which recently debuted with the Fronx, seems like an ideal candidate for the Swift. With this engine, the Swift will better justify its hot hatch tag. Offering this engine in the 2024 Swift will also bring in some sales for the turbo petrol engine. Thus, Maruti Suzuki could expand the production for the turbo petrol engine and enjoy lower manufacturing costs. In fact, some of those cost benefits may even get passed on to the consumer to accelerate the adoption of turbo petrol engines.
They are currently lagging behind in market share for turbo petrol engines. VW, Skoda, Nissan Renault, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Tata and Citroen have had at least one turbo petrol engine in their portfolio for a few years. Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki only recently added a 1.0L turbo petrol engine with the Fronx after offering it in the first-gen Baleno RS back in late-2017. As the market has shown keen interest in the turbo petrol engines, it makes sense to offer it in the Swift along with the generation update.
Besides better power output, turbo petrol engines offer a lot of torque at low RPMs, making the car extremely easy to drive even at city speeds in higher gears. Because of the low RPM torque, a turbo petrol engine requires fewer downshifts and you don’t need to rev the nuts off the engine to gain speed. Because of this nature of the turbocharged engines in general, they also tend to deliver better fuel efficiency compared to a normal petrol car with similar torque output.

No Hybrid Petrol Engine Option
Maruti Suzuki have recently shown a keen interest in bringing hybrid petrol engines in India. The Invicto and Grand Vitara are prime examples of their intention to democratise hybrid powertrains in India. While they have small displacement hybrid engines in foreign markets, we don’t expect them to launch the 2024 Swift with a hybrid engine.
Firstly, the whole efficiency vibe doesn’t go well with the tight handling personality of the Swift. It probably would suit the Dzire or the Baleno’s character more than Swift.
Secondly, without government subsidies, a hybrid powertrain in the Swift 2024 would make it prohibitively more expensive. Current hybrid cars take around 2 lakh kilometres to recover the higher additional cost you’re paying upfront for the efficient tech. CNG, meanwhile, has a lower km-to-breakeven figure of around 50,000 - 60,000km. So, it would clash with the CNG’s target buyers and come across as an expensive alternative for the cost-conscious buyers.
