President of Federation of Motor Sports Clubs Of India (FMSCI), Mr. Arindam Ghosh, recently said at a forum in New Delhi that he and a delegation of FMSCI representatives would soon meet the finance minister, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, to see how the government could help promote motorsports in India.

Prohibitively High Taxes

Currently, the motorsports activities, such as training, purchasing of parts and vehicles, participating in races, organising events, etc. carry huge taxes. These prohibitively high costs limit the access to the sport to people with huge resources. Hence, those who can afford to spend lots of money, lose and still walk away without giant financial scars are the only ones who even think of such endeavours.

Widening The Talent Pool

Mr. Ghosh and the FMSCI representatives believe that if not a subsidy, at least a leeway in taxes on motorsport related equipment and activities would go a long way in making it accessible enough to the masses. Such a move would help the country find great talent and groom them to compete at the international level.

Missing Indian Representation

It’d help move the country from a place of disgrace where we’re barely hosting international races, such as MotoGP, but have no Indian representation to a position of dominance with Indian teams racing with Indian drivers. Only after we have painstakingly worked to find and nurture the right talent for several years regardless of their financial background can we expect the future generations to grow up to represent India on the international stage and bring home trophies.

Path To Better Road Safety

Similar tax breaks would also, first make the high-quality motorcycle safety equipment more affordable for the participants and then become affordable and aspirational to typical 2-wheeler riders in India. Hence, it would not only promote road safety for motorcycle riders on public roads and save them from most injuries and even death, thus leading to a more productive workforce in India.
