Price Reaction
Now, let’s examine the launch and expected prices in a little more detail.
After getting the pricing of the C3 and C3 Aircross with crazy good accuracy and having a chat with Citroen officials, we were fairly confident of the Basalt launching at Rs. 9.0 lakh.
First, Citroen blew our expectations out of the water with a mouth-watering Rs. 7.99 lakh starting price. We ended up being off by 11.2%. For a moment, we thought: “This is it. Citroen are back and they mean business.”
Using the base variant as the baseline and calculating the value of the higher variant features, we revised our estimations. This time, we were expecting a Rs. 9.15 lakh price for the mid variant and Rs. 10.70 lakh for the mid turbo variant. Then, they announced the full price list.
Once again, they blew our expectations out of the water as we were wrong by more than 9%. The only time we have been so wrong was — not too long ago actually. We expected the Nissan X-Trail to cost around Rs. 30.0 lakh and it launched at Rs. 50.0 lakh. A deviation of 67%.
Getting back to the Basalt, it seems insanely overpriced when you consider the base variant as the baseline. However, once you ignore it, the rest of the variant lineup just seems expensive — not absurdly expensive. With that in mind, the Basalt is not very easy to recommend blindly, like we can recommend the Astor base model or the Astor’s high end automatic variants. Or certain variants of the XUV3XO. Unless you’re buying the base model of the Basalt, you're not getting much upfront value.
Question: Buy Or No Buy? Answer: Wait.
The C3 Aircross also launched with a reasonable price tag. It wasn’t overpriced at all. Still, it failed to gather enough momentum to match the demand to the production capacity. That’s why we’re seeing its mid variants selling for more than Rs. 2.5 lakh discounts. And that’s officially discounts before you even begin your bargaining.
The low starting price must have created huge demand and brought in a large number of bookings for the car. This may have prompted the carmaker to balance the supply-demand scales with a higher price for the mid and top variants.
Unfortunately, the pricing is too high to maintain that balance and the demand is likely to cool off in some time. Thus, we expect to see discounts on the mid and top turbo variants by the end of 2024 calendar year. If you are interested in the base variant and you’re getting a reasonable waiting period, then you can hold on to it. Otherwise, you should withdraw your booking unless you get a Rs. 50,000 - 1,00,000 discount on the mid and top variants of the Basalt. It’s only a matter of time before we start seeing discounts on the car.
If you want a reasonably loaded car, which is sorted in terms of must-have features, then the Astor base model is worth your serious consideration. Among more familiar brands, the Toyota Hyryder and Maruti Vitara base model also carry a good feature kit in the base variants and are worth considering.
