3 Hyundai Cars Set For Bharat NCAP Tests | V3Cars

The Bharat New Car Assessment Program, or Bharat NCAP, is gearing up to conduct their first crash test soon. Meanwhile, Hyundai have confirmed with V3Cars that they are sending 3 cars from their Indian product portfolio for the BNCAP tests. However, Hyundai did not reveal the names of the 3 models they are sending for the tests.

Hyundai Car Crash Test

In this article, we try to figure out which Hyundai models are set to undergo the Bharat NCAP tests and their significance for both Hyundai as well as sister brand Kia.

1. Hyundai Tucson

The first car that Hyundai could send for Bharat NCAP tests could be the Tucson SUV – their flagship ICE offering. Various reports over the last week have already suggested the Tucson could be the first model from Hyundai to undergo BNCAP tests. The current-gen Tucson was crash tested by Euro NCAP and Latin NCAP in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Since both testing agencies use different test protocols, the Tucson scored a 5-star rating in Euro NCAP and a 3-star rating in Latin NCAP. Hyundai could be hoping for a 5-star rating in the Bharat NCAP test as the India-spec Tucson comes loaded with safety features such as 6 airbags, 3-point seatbelts and seatbelt reminders for all passengers, ABS and ESC. The top variant of the Tucson even boasts ADAS features for enhanced passenger safety. However, like the Global NCAP protocols, Bharat NCAP does not factor advanced driver assist systems into the overall rating.

2. Hyundai Exter

The made-for-India Hyundai Exter could be the second model to undergo Bharat NCAP tests. Hyundai launched the Exter in July 2023 with segment-first safety features such as 6 airbags and 3-point seatbelts for all passengers as standard. The Exter competes against the Tata Punch, which currently holds a 5-star Global NCAP rating and is considered one of the safest cars in its segment. Since Bharat NCAP is modelled along the lines of Global NCAP, a 5-star safety rating could boost the Exter’s image among domestic car buyers and enable Hyundai to sell more Exters. The Exter’s other rivals in the segment, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis and Citroen C3, fall behind in terms of safety rating with a Global NCAP score of 3 stars and 0 stars, respectively.

3. Hyundai Creta Facelift

The third car Hyundai could send for Bharat NCAP tests could be the upcoming Creta facelift. The second-generation Creta went on sale in India in 2020 and the C1-segment SUV is due for an update soon. Over the past couple of months, various spy shots of the Creta facelift have emerged online. The updated 2024 Hyundai Creta is expected to borrow ADAS and other safety features from the Kia Seltos facelift, which was launched in July this year. The addition of 6 airbags, 3-point seatbelts and individual headrests for all passengers should enable the Creta facelift to score a 5-star safety rating in the Bharat NCAP tests. In comparison, the current version of the Creta scored a 3-star rating in Global NCAP’s Safer Cars For India programme while the Creta facelift sold in Southeast Asian markets scored a 5-star rating in the ASEAN NCAP tests. Since Bharat NCAP is voluntary, a 5-star safety rating for the Creta facelift could save Kia the trouble of the sending the Seltos facelift for the tests since both cars share the same platform, safety features and powertrains.
