2022 Mahindra Scorpio – 5 Things We Can Expect | V3Cars
Mahindra have been testing the latest generation of the Scorpio on our roads for well over 2 years now. The Mahindra Scorpio, which went on sale in 2002, is currently in its third facelift now. The new Scorpio for 2022 is expected to be based on an all-new platform and feature a revised design and a few tweaks to its engine, transmission and feature list.
Here, we have listed the top 5 changes we expect in the all-new Mahindra Scorpio, ahead of its launch later this year.
1. New Design
The Mahindra Scorpio has a cult following mainly due to its imposing design and road presence. It is one of the reasons why people still buy it despite being 2 decades old. Based on the spy shots we’ve seen so far, we expect the new Scorpio to carry forward the butch stance that turned the Scorpio into what it is today. The new Scorpio appears longer and wider than before. Various spy shots reveal the new Scorpio’s dual-pod LED headlamps with dynamic turn signals and a new grille with 6 vertical slats. The new Mahindra logo will take pride at the centre of the grille. The bumper and fog lamp housing are all new and the bonnet is more upright than before.

The spy shots of the new Scorpio also reveal a slight curve between the C and D pillars as opposed to the completely squared-off window line in the current generation. The new Scorpio will also feature alloy wheels with a new design. At the rear, we can expect a new bumper, tailgate and Volvo-like LED wraparound taillights.
2. Brand-New Interior
From the spy shots, we know that the 2022 Scorpio will have a completely new, all-black interior. It is expected to pack a new touchscreen infotainment system with the AdrenoX UI and connected car technology that we first saw in the XUV700. The AC vents are placed vertically beside the touchscreen, with the controls for auto AC right under it. The new Scorpio will also feature a new steering wheel borrowed from the XUV700. It will get a full-colour TFT instrument cluster as well.

Spy shots of the 2022 Scorpio from the past suggest that the new Scorpio will get an electric sunroof, which is a feature that is missing from the current Scorpio. The new Scorpio will feature 7 seats, all of which will be front-facing. The rear passengers will get rear AC vents and a charging socket. The car will also come equipped with 6 airbags to meet upcoming safety regulations. We can also expect a 360-degree parking camera.
3. Engine and Transmission
The new Scorpio will get a 2.2L turbo diesel engine. This engine can also be found in the XUV700, where it produces 185PS of power and 450Nm of torque. However, it remains to be seen if Mahindra detune the engine in the Scorpio as they have done in the past. The 2022 Scorpio will continue to send power to the rear wheels as standard while a 4-wheel drive system could be offered in the top-spec variants. As far as transmission options go, we expect Mahindra to offer the 2022 Scorpio with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed TC automatic transmission.

The new Scorpio could also get the 2.0L turbo petrol engine from the XUV700. In the XUV700, this engine produces 200PS of power and 380Nm of torque. Mahindra could detune the petrol engine in the new Scorpio in order to maintain the XUV700’s positioning as a flagship in their product range. In the XUV700, the petrol engine can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed TC automatic transmission.
4. Prices and Rivals
Currently, the Mahindra Scorpio is priced between Rs. 13.53 lakh and Rs. 18.61 lakh. While the bigger dimensions coupled with the addition of new features and more powerful engine options should increase the price of the 2022 Scorpio, we do not expect it to cost more than Mahindra’s flagship, the XUV700. We expect the new Scorpio to be priced between Rs. 11 lakh and Rs. 22 lakh. If we recall, the XUV700 was launched at an introductory price of Rs. 12 lakh (ex-showroom).

The new Scorpio will go up against other 7-seater SUVs in the segment, such as the Tata Safari, Hyundai Alcazar and the MG Hector Plus. The new Scorpio will also compete with the XUV700, but is likely to be offered as a more affordable alternative with fewer features. The key selling points of the new Scorpio are expected to be its popularity, muscular stance, the standard RWD setup and its robust nature.
5. Expected Launch Date
Over the last two years, Mahindra launched new generation versions of 2 of their most popular SUVs. These include the new-gen Thar and the successor to the XUV500, the XUV700. One common aspect between the launch of these two SUVs was that Mahindra launched them on Independence Day. We can expect Mahindra to continue this trend and launch the new Scorpio on August 15.
However, this year also marks the 20th anniversary of the Scorpio, which was first launched in June 2002. Hence, we can also expect Mahindra to launch the new Scorpio in June this year to commemorate its 20th anniversary. We reckon Mahindra might unveil the new Scorpio in June and launch it later on August 15.
