15 Reasons To Pick Tata Harrier EV Instead Of Mahindra XEV 9e | V3Cars
Here is an exhaustive list of 15 features, which should convince you to buy the Tata Harrier EV and skip the Mahindra XEV 9e. We have included advantages of Harrier EV over XEV 9e ranging from performance to flashy features

1. Panoramic Sunroof
While the Mahindra XEV 9e gets one large, crease-free glass roof, which you can’t open, the Harrier EV gets a smaller panoramic sunroof, which you can open and close at will.
2. 2 Dashcams
We have seen a factory-fit dual-dashcam setup from Hyundai. And they offer it even in their affordable cars like the Exter. But unlike the Exter’s dashcam, which records the front and the cabin. The cabin cam with voice recording feels a bit intrusive on the occupants’ privacy.
The Tata Harrier EV’s dashcam implementation is a bit more practical. It has one front-facing and one rear-facing camera. With front and rear angles covered, they do a much better job of recording any road user’s erratic driving behaviour than the Hyundai's implementation.
3. 3x Memory For Power Driver Seat
While the XEV 9e and Harrier EV both get 6-way power driver seats, the Harrier EV makes the car even more convenient for sharing with its memory function. And it’s not just one or two settings. It gets a total of 3 memory settings. So, 3 people in the family can conveniently share the car and save their seating preferences.
4. 4-way Power Passenger Seat
The front passenger gets manual adjustment in the Mahindra XEV 9e. The Harrier EV gets a 4-way power passenger seat with the ability to slide and recline it forward while sitting in the rear seat. This helps the rear seat occupant liberate more leg room.
5. 504Nm Of Peak Torque
While Tata have provided a combined torque figure for the dual-motor variant, we don’t have the separate peak torque output of each motor. Either way, if you buy the top variant of the Harrier EV, you can rest easy knowing that you have 124Nm (or about a third) higher torque output than the most expensive 9e variant on sale today.
6. 600mm Water Wading Capacity
Mahindra did highlight their EVs’ ability to go through deep water but they aren’t officially claiming any water wading ability like they did with the Thar and Thar Roxx. However, Tata are claiming to offer 600mm of water wading ability with the Harrier EV. That may not sound as impressive as the Thar’s 650mm figure but it’s still twice as good as that of the Maruti Jimny.
7. Larger Base Model Battery
With the XEV 9e, Mahindra offer 59kWh and 79kWh battery options; and the larger battery option is reserved for the top model only.
With the Harrier EV also, you get 2 battery options — 65kWh and 75kWh. While the XEV 9e top model has a larger battery capacity than the Harrier EV, Tata are offering around 10% larger battery with the Harrier EV base model compared to the XEV 9e base model.
8. Rear View Mirror + Camera
Just like any other car, the Harrier EV gets a rear view mirror in the car, but it is hiding a nifty little trick up its sleeve. It’s also a screen. You can switch it on to get the rear view straight from a rear-facing camera hiding in the car’s shark-fin antenna.
The fact that this is an electronic feature, makes it less reliable than a simple mirror. But you don't have to give up the mirror functionality to get this feature. Moreover, a normal IRVM blocks the view when you are carrying bigger cargo or you have a tall person in the rear centre seat. With the screen, you get full coverage regardless of the 2nd row occupancy or cargo in the boot.
9. Transparent Floor Mode
To add to its off-road-ability, the Harrier EV also gets some software and camera voodoo to record and then display what’s underneath the car to help you maneuver the car effectively in off-road conditions.
10. 100kmph In 6.3 Seconds
With the dual-motor setup, the Harrier EV has all 4 tyres sending torque to the road. This helps the car achieve a 0-100kmph acceleration time of 6.3 seconds. That’s half a second quicker than the XEV 9e top model with the larger battery pack.
11. Better Power Output (Base & 4WD)
The Harrier EV’s base model, which gets a single motor and 65kWh battery pack is capable of delivering 238PS of power while the XEV 9e is slightly shy with 231PS figure.
On the other end of the spectrum, the 9e’s top model has 286PS of maximum power while the Harrier’s rear and front motors can deliver 238PS and 158PS of power, respectively. While we don’t know the exact peak power yet, rest assured that the net peak system power will be considerably higher than that of the XEV 9e top variant.
Note: If you just want to add up the 2 power figures to get to the final number, this is not how it works. Both the motors are different and have different final drive ratios and deliver peak power at different RPMs. So, the peak system power with 2 motors will be less than the simple sum of 2 figures.
12. V2V & V2L
Given the deep software integration, we expect the XEV 9e to also be capable of adding the V2V and V2L feature with a software update. But as things stand, Mahindra have absolutely no mention of this feature on the new EVs’ brochure or product page.
Hence, we have to assume that the Harrier EV has the upper hand over the 9e with this feature available from day-1.
13. Dual-Motor & 4-wheel Drive
The flagship and the most hyped feature of the Harrier EV is its 4-wheel drivetrain, which is enabled by the dual-motor setup. This makes the Harrier EV the only 4WD vehicle in Tata’s Indian portfolio.
With 4WD, the Harrier EV can not only maintain grip on low-traction surfaces and do a bit of mild off-roading, but it also helps improve the acceleration of the car. We will discuss this later in the article.
14. 14.5-inch Display w/ Samsung Tech
The XEV 9e has up to 3 screens in the dashboard but they all measure 12.3 inches diagonally. The Harrier only has 2 — a 10.25-inch display for the driver and a 14.5-inch screen for the infotainment. This feels large but not too large to feel intrusive as the one in the MG Windsor.
But size is not the talking point here. This is a Samsung-sourced Neo QLED display. Not quite as high-tech as OLED but better than anything you can find in a car — at least in India.
The QLED screen has the ability to deliver regional dimming. It can separately manage the brightness of the LED backlight in areas projecting darker portions on the display. Thus, it is able to achieve much better contrast and deeper black without significantly adding to the cost by choosing an OLED.
A typical car display tends to leak light when using it to only display the clock or when we turn it off. This is not much of a problem during the day but it is quite annoying at night for people who find that grey light leakage distracting.
15. Retrace 50m
Lastly, the retrace feature is a life saver, which will make you fall in love with the car even if you only end up using it once during the entire vehicle ownership.
Say you are entering a parking spot and there’s not much room to manoeuvre into it. So, if you’re like me, you might choose to reverse the vehicle into the spot so that it’s easier to get out of there. And even if you manage to get into the spot in one go with forward gear engaged, you’ll still have a tough time getting out.
With the retrace feature, as long as you drove the car forward without engaging reverse, you can just let the car drive you out of the spot as it manages the steering. While retracing, the steering inputs are exactly the same as what you gave to the car but done in reverse.
