What Are The Pros And Cons Of Renault Kiger Petrol?

The pros or advantages of Renault Kiger petrol are:

• Choice of 4 engine-transmission combinations
• Both petrol engines are very fuel-efficient
• A solid 4-star GNCAP adult crash test safety rating
• All variants are well priced over the base variant for the additional features
• Biggest boot space in the segment; it’s considerably bigger than even the Magnite, which shares the platform and mechanicals with the Kiger
• 205mm ground clearance is second only to the Nexon’s 209mm
• 16-inch wheels are standard on all variants

The Renault Kiger petrol has the following shortcomings or problems:

• 16-inch wheels with the 1.0L normal petrol engine may affect its drivability because of the higher rotating mass
• Doesn’t offer the road presence like the Magnite; from a distance, it looks like a slightly larger Kwid
• Limited sales and service network
• No sunroof and 6 airbag options
• Cruise control not available in any variant - Addressed by Renault in April 2022 update
• Turbo petrol engine not available in well-priced RXT (O) variant - Addressed by Renault in April 2022 update

What Is The Price Of Renault Kiger Petrol Variants?

The 2022 Renault Kiger is available with 4 engine-transmission combinations:

• 1.0L normal petrol with manual transmission
• 1.0L turbo petrol with manual transmission
• 1.0L normal petrol with AMT automatic transmission
• 1.0L turbo petrol with CVT automatic transmission

The normal petrol engine with manual transmission is available in all 5 variants with prices starting from Rs. 5.99 lakh for the base RXE variant and going up to Rs. 8.39 lakh (ex-showroom) for the RXZ variant. The normal petrol engine is also available with an AMT automatic transmission in the higher 3 variants for an additional Rs. 55,000.

The turbo petrol engine with manual transmissions is available in the top 2 variants, which cost Rs. 8.92 lakh and Rs. 9.49 lakh. For an additional Rs. 90,000, you can get the Kiger turbo with the CVT automatic transmission as well. Only the top-spec RXZ turbo petrol with CVT automatic costs more than Rs. 10.0 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Kiger turbo petrol engine with the manual transmission costs Rs. 1.10 lakh more than the Kiger normal petrol-manual. The price difference between the Kiger turbo petrol-automatic and normal petrol-automatic is slightly higher at Rs. 1.45 lakh. This is because the turbo petrol gets a more expensive CVT-type automatic while the normal petrol engine gets AMT automatic.

Renault Kiger Petrol RXE - Base Model Features & Review

The base RXE variant of the Renault Kiger is only available with the 1.0L normal petrol engine and a manual transmission. It costs Rs. 5.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The most notable features of the Kiger RXE are:

• Dual-tone horn
• Air purifier
• Front adjustable headrests
• Internally adjustable outside mirrors
• Manual AC
• Front power windows
• Front armrest
• Rear parking sensors
• 16-inch steel wheels
• LED DRLs
• LED tail lamps
• Double-barrel halogen reflector headlamps

In the base model, you might miss the following must-have features:

• Power mirrors
• Music system
• Steering-mounted controls
• Remote central locking
• Day/night inside mirror
• Wheel covers

Because of these missing critical must-have features, we won’t recommend buying the base RXE variant even to budget buyers. The RXL variant is also not a value for money upgrade but we’ll still recommend stretching your budget as it’ll offer far better ownership experience for a small compromise on the value front.

Renault Kiger Petrol RXE vs RXL Variant - Price, Feature Comparison

The RXL variant of the Kiger also only gets a 1.0L normal petrol engine with manual transmission and costs Rs. 96,000 more than the base model. For the additional price, it adds the following notable features:

• Music system
• Rear parcel shelf
• Tilt steering
• Day/night inside mirror
• Power mirrors
• Rear power windows
• Rear AC vents

In the Kiger RXL, you may miss features like:

• Height-adjustable driver seat
• Touchscreen infotainment
• Rear camera
• Tyre pressure sensors (TPMS)
• Steering-mounted controls

The RXL variant is not a value for money upgrade but comes quite close to justifying the additional cost over the base model. While the jump to the RXL variant is quite steep, we’ll still recommend buying at least this variant for a good ownership experience. If you want better value and ownership experience, then the Kiger RXT is an easier-to-recommend variant.

Besides the 1.0L normal petrol-manual, the RXT variant also offers optional AMT automatic for an additional Rs. 55,000. The RXT normal petrol-manual costs Rs. 7.50 lakh while the RXT AMT automatic costs Rs. 8.05 lakh (ex-showroom). These prices are Rs. 54,500 more than the lower RXL variant. For this additional price, the Kiger RXT adds the following notable features over the RXL trim:

• 2x side thorax airbags
• Keyless entry with push-button start/stop
• Split rear seat backs
• Closed central console storage
• Upper glove box
• 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple Carplay
• Stylish wheel covers
• Height-adjustable driver seat

Considering the asking price of Kiger RXT, you may miss the following features in this variant:

• Rear defogger
• LED headlamps

For Kiger manual buyers, the RXT variant completely justifies the price gap even over the base variant with the additional features. For automatic buyers, this is the most affordable option and a suitably-priced one too. However, we’ll suggest spending a little more for the RXT (O) variant, which offers more features for some more cash. The RXT (O) offers even better value for money and is the one worth buying for all Kiger normal petrol-manual and automatic buyers

If you’re not keen to add good-to-have features like alloy wheels and LED headlamps, then you should buy the RXT instead of the RXT (O).

Renault Kiger Petrol RXT vs RXT (O) Variant - Price, Feature Comparison

RXT (O) variant onwards, all 4 engine transmission combinations are available. The RXT (O) normal petrol engine costs Rs. 32,500 more than the RXT while the AMT automatic adds another Rs. 55,000 to the ex-showroom price. The RXT (O) turbo petrol-manual costs Rs. 8.92 lakh with the manual and Rs. 9.82 lakh with the automatic. The CVT automatic is Rs. 90,000 pricier than the turbo-petrol-manual. The turbo petrol-manual is Rs. 1.10 lakh more expensive than the normal petrol-manual variants. This variant adds the following additional features over the RXT variant:

• LED projector headlamps
• Machined alloy wheels
• Wireless smartphone integration

Even in the fairly well-loaded RXT (O) variant, you might miss the following features, which are only available in the top model:

• Cooled storage
• Auto AC
• Power folding mirrors
• Leather steering and gear knob
• Rear defogger

The RXT (O) variant is our top recommendation for the Kiger 1.0L normal petrol buyers because of the value it offers over the lower variants. While all of its features are good-to-have, the asking price is so small for the additional features that the upgrade is obvious.

For turbo petrol buyers, the price jump over the normal petrol engine seems quite high. So, we’ll suggest stretching your budget a bit more for the RXZ top variant for better value.

Renault Kiger Petrol RXT (O) vs RXZ Variant - Price, Feature Comparison

The 1.0L normal petrol engine of the top-spec RXZ variant of the new Kiger has an ex-showroom price of Rs. 8.39 lakh with the manual and Rs. 8.94 lakh with the automatic. The RXZ turbo petrol-manual costs Rs. 9.49 lakh and with the CVT automatic, it costs Rs. 10.39 lakh. The RXZ variant is Rs. 57,400 more expensive than the lower RXT (O) variant. For this additional price, it offers the following features:

• Rear defogger
• Drive modes
• Cooled glovebox
• Cruise control (turbo only)
• Auto AC
• Wireless phone charging
• Power folding mirrors
• 7-inch full-colour LCD instrument cluster
• Quilted fabric upholstery
• 4x tweeters
• Ambient lighting
• Leather-wrapped gear and steering

Even with the top variant, you might miss features like:

• Tyre pressure sensors (TPMS)
• 360-degree camera
• Sunroof

The RXZ turbo better justifies  the high premium for the performance with the additional features. The top model is only Rs. 57,400 more expensive and adds enough features for turbo petrol buyers to earn our top recommendation. Turbo-CVT buyers will have to do some maths to see how the on-road price in your area affects the overall price difference between the RXT (O) and RXZ variants. Judging by the ex-showroom price alone, we find the RXZ CVT a value for upgrade over the RXT (O) CVT.

For normal petrol buyers, the RXZ variant is worth considering but the RXT (O) will meet the needs of most buyers in terms of value and ownership experience. It's worth noting that despite the same price gap over the lower RXT (O) variant, the RXZ variant doesn’t get cruise control with the non-turbo petrol engines. In our opinion, it’s not a major miss because the normal petrol engine is not a good choice for frequent highway driving, but we wish it had a smaller price gap because of this missing feature.

Which Variant Of The 2022 Renault Kiger Petrol Should You Buy?

For normal petrol buyers, the RXE seems too basic and we recommend buying at least the RXL variant to budget buyers. The RXL variant doesn’t offer great value but it’s worth buying for a decent ownership experience. At the same time, it isn’t too overpriced either.

If you can upgrade, then the RXT is a far better upgrade over the RXL. Although the RXT (O) offers even better value with some big-ticket good-to-have features like alloy wheels and LED headlamps for a nominal asking price. For most buyers, the RXT (O) will meet the requirements perfectly while offering the best value for money. The RXZ is a slightly expensive upgrade over the RXT (O) since it doesn’t get cruise control.

For Renault Kiger turbo petrol buyers, the RXZ seems to offer far better value than the RXT (O) as it also offers cruise control, which is not available with the normal petrol engine. Because of this exclusive feature, it better justifies the asking price over the normal petrol engine.

For turbo CVT automatic buyers, however, the choice is not as straightforward as for the manual buyers. On the basis of ex-showroom price alone, the turbo CVT RXZ variant is our top recommendation. However, its ex-showroom price breaches the Rs. 10.0 lakh barrier, which could drastically increase the on-road price difference over the RXT (O) variant. I’ll suggest buying the RXZ CVT automatic if the on-road price difference between RXZ turbo manual and RXZ turbo automatic is less than Rs. 1.20 lakh.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Renault Kiger Petrol?

The Kiger is available with 2 engine options — a 1.0-litre normal petrol and a 1.0-litre turbo petrol. Compared to the other cars in the segment with a normal petrol engine, the Kiger has the lowest power and torque output, but its torque-to-weight ratio is on par with the normal petrol models of the WRV, Venue and Sonet. The Kiger normal petrol model shares its frame, engine and transmission with the Nissan Magnite. So, we can assume that Kiger’s base petrol engine also delivers similar fuel efficiency.

The Kiger is the most affordable sub-4m SUV with an automatic transmission and starts at Rs. 7.82 lakh (ex-showroom). This is because the Kiger offers an AMT automatic with the 1.0L normal petrol. If you want an affordable SUV with an automatic transmission, the Punch is the only other alternative, although it’s smaller than the Kiger and also offers fewer features.

Among the turbocharged rivals, the Kiger leads with the best-in-class torque-to-weight ratio of 158Nm/t, which is on par with the Magnite turbo. With the CVT automatic, this figure dips down to 146 but still remains comparable with that of the Venue turbo, Nexon, Sonet turbo and XUV300. The Kiger and Magnite are the most fuel-efficient cars among the turbocharged sub-4m SUV class as well.

What Are The Dimensions Of The 2022 Renault Kiger?

The Kiger is a fairly wide and tall car but its ground clearance is worth talking about more than anything else. The 205mm ground clearance is second only to the Nexon’s 209mm and on par with the Sonet and Magnite’s. The boot space is another notable aspect of the Kiger’s dimensions. It’s the largest in the segment. Shockingly, it’s considerably larger than even the Magnite even though the 2 cars share platform and powertrains.
