What Are The Pros And Cons Of Mahindra Scorpio Classic Diesel?

The pros or advantages of Mahindra Scorpio Classic diesel are:

  • Scorpio brand name has strong recall and high resale value in big cities as well as small towns and villages
  • Rugged and abuse-friendly body-on-frame SUV
  • Improved mileage figures are acceptable for a big and heavy SUV like the Scorpio Classic
  • 3rd row centre armrest is a rare feature even in SUVs costing 2-3 times as much as the Scorpio Classic S11
  • Option of 9-seat and two 7-seat layouts (one with 3rd row jump seats and one with a bench)
  • The Scorpio Classic’s improved diesel engine is smoother and gets cable-shift transmission for reduced vibrations, shorter throws and less effort and a polished ownership experience

The Mahindra Scorpio Classic diesel has the following shortcomings or problems:

  • Barebones base variant and non-value-for-money top variant make neither a viable option worth recommending
  • Price overlap with Scorpio N Z6 diesel-manual and proximity with the Z8 variants makes the Scorpio Classic’s pricing even more difficult to digest
  • Missing features like front parking sensors, sunroof, power-folding mirrors, Android Auto and Apple Carplay
  • The cabin feels surprisingly small in terms of leg room for an SUV with large exterior proportions

What Is The Price Of Mahindra Scorpio Classic Diesel Variants?

The Scorpio Classic only gets a diesel-manual powertrain and it’s available in 2 variants - S and S11. The S variant costs Rs. 11.99 lakh while the S11 costs Rs. 15.49 lakh.

Most of the features of the S11 variant are must-have in our opinion. However, these features only justify about 2/3rd of the incremental cost you have to pay for the top variant. Since there is not much choice for Scorpio Classic buyers, we’ll suggest compromising on the value and buying the S11 variant.

However, if you’re not too keen about getting a delivery right away, then you should instead consider buying the Scorpio N Z6 diesel variant, which costs Rs. 50,000 less than the S11 Scorpio Classic. With this variant, you will miss a few features but you’ll get a much bigger SUV, more powerful diesel engine, a more modern cabin experience and a fresh styling.

If you can stretch your budget a little more, then for another Rs. 2.0 lakh over the Classic S11’s price, you can get the Z8 variant of the Scorpio N diesel-manual, which is our top recommendation. It gets modern features like:

  • 6 airbags
  • LED headlamps
  • Keyless entry
  • Power-folding mirrors
  • 2-zone auto AC
  • Tyre pressure sensors (TPMS)
  • Auto headlamps and wipers

With the Scorpio N Z6 or Z8, you’ll miss the option of captain seats in the 2nd row and you'll have to wait for more than a year to get the delivery of your car. But, if you can wait, then the Scorpio N Z8 is a far better option than the Scorpio Classic.

Which Variant Of The Mahindra Scorpio Classic Diesel Should You Buy?

The Scorpio Classic’s base S variant is too basic and doesn’t get several must-have features. So, we can’t recommend the S trim. The S11 is a little expensive for what it offers and doesn’t offer a good value for money. For a decent ownership experience, you can go for the S11 variant and compromise on value.

We will suggest instead booking the Scorpio N Z6 or Z8 diesel-manual variants. The Z6 costs Rs. 50,000 less than the S11 while the Z8 diesel is Rs. 2.0 lakh more expensive. Both of these cars will offer a far better ownership experience as well as value than the Classic S11. The only catch is that you will have a long wait for the Scorpio N while the Classic is more readily available with shorter delivery timelines.
