Here’s what IESA have to say about the International Summit 2024:

With the government's ambitious ACC-PLI scheme supporting the development of 40 GWh of Lithium-Ion Cell production capacity, India is expected to witness a significant increase in battery manufacturing capacity. In its endeavour to discuss the future roadmap for India’s promising Lithium-Ion Battery segment, leading industry body, India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) is set to organize a comprehensive International Summit on Lithium-Ion Batteries on the 4th October 2024 at the India International Centre (IIC), New Delhi. This summit aims to address the critical role of lithium-ion battery technology in India’s transition toward clean transportation, green energy, and net-zero emissions. The summit will see an active presence from the Ministry of Heavy Industries, the Ministry of Mines, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), and others. The summit is expected to witness the participation from Potential giga factories like AMARA RAJA, Exide Energy, Reliance, TATA Agratas, JSW Energy, Ola Electric, and more.

As one of the world's leading importers of lithium-ion batteries, India is at the forefront of adopting advanced energy storage technologies. In FY 2023, India imported lithium-ion batteries worth $3.59 billion from countries like China, South Korea, Vietnam, and Japan. The country is home to over 100 lithium battery pack manufacturing companies, catering to the electric vehicle (EV), power electronics, and stationary storage sectors.

India is expecting a cumulative demand of 600-900 GWh Lithium batteries by 2032. With these huge opportunities, India is also working on appropriate safety standards considering the application, temperature, and environmental conditions. With current usage in Telecom, and EV, multiple companies have already developed LiB recycling facilities in India. Various Indian National Labs and start-ups are working on development of advanced lithium technologies including Lithium Sulphur, solid-state batteries, etc. With these opportunities, we expect the Indian industry to need to increase its investment 5X in the next 5 years.

Debi Prasad Dash, President of IESA, commented:

The lithium-ion battery industry is crucial to India's clean energy goals. This summit will help shape the roadmap for the country’s transition to sustainable energy, presenting a unique opportunity for Indian and global players to collaborate and innovate. With the projected demand and developments in technology, this is the right time for increased investment and focus on scaling lithium-ion battery manufacturing in India.” Mr. Dash also said 300+ industry leaders will gather at the event to discuss various topics including new R&D, innovation, manufacturing, supply chain, Raw materials, stationary energy storage, electric mobility, recycling, second life, and others.

The summit will provide a platform for industry stakeholders, policymakers, and experts to discuss key topics, including the status of India’s giga factories, the development of critical minerals, recycling technologies, and the future of lithium-ion batteries in the grid and renewable energy storage, electric mobility, and emerging applications.

The Summit will discuss the status of Indian giga factories under the PLI and non-PLI schemes. It will also highlight critical minerals scenario for lithium, cathodes, anodes, and electrolyte manufacturing in India. Addressing safety, certification, and testing requirements for lithium-ion batteries, the platform aims to strengthen India’s Lithium Battery ecosystem. Industry Experts from various countries will share insights on the advances in lithium battery recycling and second-life applications, Lithium-ion-based Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for the electricity grid and commercial sectors, and the latest innovations in solid-state and lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery technologies.
