Tata Harrier And Safari Petrol Will Not See The Light Of The Day | V3Cars

According to our sources, the Harrier and Safari SUVs will not get a petrol engine. While multiple spy shots of both the Harrier and Safari petrol surfaced online, it seems like both the Harrier and the Safari will not see the light of the day.

Tata Harrier And Safari

Currently, both the Harrier and Safari come with a 2.0L turbo diesel engine, sourced from FCA. Tata were reportedly working on an extension of the 3-cylinder 1.2L turbo engine block. With the added engineering and an extra cylinder, the displacement of the 1.2L turbo petrol was likely to grow to 1.5L. However, Tata have now decided not to offer the 1.5L turbo petrol engine with the Harrier and Safari, owing to the stringent emission norms, which will come into effect soon. This leaves less than adequate time to develop the 1.5L turbo petrol engine. Moreover, Tata don’t have a product in their portfolio, which needs a 1.5L normal or turbo petrol engine. Hence, we are expecting Tata Motors to scrap the plans to engineer a new petrol engine.

Tata Harrier and Safari are the two big SUVs in the portfolio of Tata Motors. While the Nexon comes with a 1.2L turbo petrol engine, the Punch is likely to make use of the same 1.2L turbo petrol with a 5-speed transmission, which is available with the Altroz

Tata Motors recently shifted their focus to Gen-2 and Gen-3 EVs, with the unveil of the Curvv concept and Avinya concept. These are their first crop of electric vehicles with a dedicated EV-specific platform. The electric range will help Tata Motors not only to pick up an early mover advantage but also in complying with upcoming CAFE-II norms.

Going further, we expect Tata Motors to stick with their current range of engine options and invest heavily in battery electric vehicles. At the unveil of the Curvv concept, Tata Motors officials indicated that, at least in the foreseeable future, they will not have any hybrid powertrain in their portfolio either. This leaves us with the current range of engines, which include the 1.2L normal petrol engine, 1.2L turbo petrol engine, 1.5L turbo diesel engine and the FCA-sourced 2.0L turbo diesel engine.
