Kia Trademark Clavis Name – Hyundai Exter, Tata Punch Rival Incoming? | V3Cars
Kia have trademarked a new name – the Clavis – in India. Reports suggest the Clavis could be a B1-segment SUV based on the same platform as the Hyundai Exter. If the reports are true, the Clavis would not only compete with the Hyundai Exter but also the Tata Punch, which was the second best-selling SUV in India after the Nexon facelift in November 2023.
Kia Clavis Name Trademarked – Potential Tata Punch Rival?
The resounding success of the Tata Punch B1-segment SUV in the Indian market resulted in the launch of the Hyundai Exter. While the Tata Punch’s averages a monthly sales figure of over 13,000 units, Hyundai have consistently shifted over 8,000 units of the Exter from its factory gates in the last 3 months. Even then, the Tata Punch’s sales figures just keep growing month-on-month. However, the launch of the Kia Clavis could help Hyundai-Kia stop the Punch’s juggernaut in the Indian passenger car market.
In a recent interaction with Kia’s national head of sales and marketing, Mr. Hardeep Singh Brar, we learned that Kia India currently do not have any plans of launching hatchbacks or sedans in the country yet. Since entering India, Kia have quickly become the 5th largest carmaker in the country on the back of the success of its SUVs such as the Seltos and Sonet and MPVs such as the Carens and Carnival. Hence, we are confident the Clavis will be an SUV. However, we are awaiting more details to see where the Clavis would fit into Kia India’s portfolio. But all the information we currently have point towards the Clavis being a B1-segment SUV.

The Tata Punch, on the other hand, features 1.2-litre normal petrol and CNG engine options that put out 88PS/115Nm and 74PS/103Nm, respectively.

Kia Clavis Expected Price
The Kia Clavis is likely to make its debut before Diwali 2024 and go on sale just in time for the festive season car buying spree. Since it is expected to take on the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch, expect a similar price tag as these small SUVs. Currently, the Hyundai Exter is priced from Rs. 6.0 lakh to Rs. 10.15 lakh, while the Tata Punch is priced similarly, from Rs. 6.0 lakh to Rs. 10.10 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). The Kia Clavis could be priced at a small premium over the Hyundai Exter as it is expected to offer more premium features as standard.
