In this June 2023 cars sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change in sales figures for each carmaker, segment and body style in India. Where applicable, we’ll also include our observations based on the sales data and possible reasons behind a massive increase or drop in sales.
Brand-Wise June 2023 Car Sales - YoY Change
- In terms of percentage, Citroen posted the best YoY improvement of 1202.60% because of the low numbers in June 2022. It is worth noting that Citroen is not yet a high volume manufacturer in India.
- Among the high volume carmakers, Mahindra posted the best growth in June YoY comparison, with a 22.32% rise in sales.
- Mahindra was followed by Toyota, with a 10.45% YoY growth.
- The biggest loser was Renault with a 41.50% decline in YoY dispatch numbers in June.
- Renault was followed by Honda and then Skoda with a 35% and 34% decline, respectively, in YoY numbers.
- Maruti Suzuki was the top-seller for cars in the Indian automobile market, with over 1.30 lakh units dispatched in June 2023, which is a 5.93% YoY growth compared to 1.23 lakh units dispatched in June 2022.
- Hyundai was second in the ranking for best sellers, with 50,000 units dispatched in June 2023, which less than half of that of Maruti Suzuki.

Brand-Wise June 2023 Car Sales - MoM Change
- Citroen was the top gaining brand in the MoM sales comparison, with a 24.44% growth in numbers. The other gainers in June MoM comparison were Renault with a 17.84% MoM growth and Skoda with 11.81% MoM growth in June.
- Speaking of losers, Jeep was the top losing brand with a 33% decline in MoM dispatches in June compared to May.
- The other notable losers in the MoM comparison were:
- MG with 21.27% drop
- Maruti Suzuki with 9.57% drop
- Toyota with 5.89% drop

Segment-Wise June 2023 Car Sales - YoY Change
- All except A segment cars saw a growth in YoY comparison. The A-segment cars reported a 19.59% YoY decline in dispatches.
- In terms of YoY change, the D1-segment was the biggest gainer, posting a YoY growth of over 70%.
- The D1-segment was followed by the C2-segment with a YoY growth of 33.40% in June 2023.
- Next on the rankings was the B1 and C1-segment, which witnessed a YoY growth of around 18% in our June 2023 comparison analysis against the numbers from June 2022.

Segment-Wise June 2023 Car Sales - MoM Change
- Out of 7 segments in the Indian car market, only B1, C2 and D2-segments saw a growth in dispatch numbers in MoM comparison analysis.
- Speaking of MoM gainers in June comparison, the D2-segment reported a 8.75% MoM growth in June, making it the top growing segment. The C2-segment was a close second and saw a 7.14% MoM rise. B1-segment was right behind with 6.93% MoM growth.
- D1 and C1-segments saw an MoM drop of around 22% in June comparison analysis, making them the top losing car segments in India. The A-segment saw an MoM drop of nearly 3.13% in June compared to May.

Body-Wise June 2023 Car Sales - YoY Change
- Pickups witnessed the biggest YoY growth of over 1700% in June 2023 compared to June 2022.
- The SUV was the best-selling bodystyle in India. It was followed by hatchbacks, which saw a 8.53% drop in sales in June 2023 compared to June 2022.
- Only SUVs and pickups saw a growth in the YoY comparison analysis. SUV sales rose by 15% in June 2023 compared to June 2022.
- MPVs saw a 7% drop in sales in June YoY comparison analysis.

- MPVs were the top losers by reporting a 8.89% drop in MoM comparison to May sales figures
- SUVs were the second top losing bodystyle with 3.45% MoM decline in June compared to May
- Hatchbacks reported a 2.41% decline in MoM comparison in June over May 2023
- Pickups and sedans were the gainers in the MoM comparison with a 6% and 1.53% growth in sales over May, respectively
- Sedans reported a gain of 1.53% in MoM sales comparison
