Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Revealed

Unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Ioniq 5 N is Hyundai performance division’s first stab at making a high-performance electric vehicle. Equipped with 2 electric motors, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N puts out a total output of 600PS of power and 740Nm of torque. Engaging the N Grin Boost mode further increases power to up to 641PS and torque to 770Nm for up to 10 seconds. 

Compared to the standard Ioniq 5, the Ioniq 5 N features several enhancements to its design. The most obvious change is the updated aerodynamic package and the larger alloy wheels over the standard model. Other changes include a revised suspension setup and improved regenerative braking for a more performance-oriented driving experience. Other changes include a larger 15.75-inch front disc brakes with 4-piston monoblock calipers and  14.17-inch rear disc brakes with single-piston calipers.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Gets A Simulated 8-Speed Transmission

The most notable highlight of the Ioniq 5 N is Hyundai’s ‘N e-shift’ system that promises to deliver the same sensations as the carmaker’s 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. The new system simulates the jolt experienced during garshifts by controlling the torque output of the electric motor. The N e-shift system is complemented by ‘N Active Sound+’ system, which offers 3 distinctive sound themes. 

The ‘Ignition’ theme replicates the sound of Hyundai N's 2.0L turbo petrol engine, while the ‘Evolution’ theme draws inspiration from the RN22e high-performance, all-electric prototype. The ‘Supersonic’ theme incorporates variable volume during cornering, taking inspiration from the sound of a twin-engine fighter jet. These simulated sounds and shifts aim to provide drivers with clear feedback about the actions and performance of the electric vehicle.

The ‘N Drift Optimizer’ is another notable feature that aims to facilitate drifting. This system helps maintain a drift angle by managing multiple vehicle systems. In situations where the driver requires additional effort to initiate a drift, Hyundai has integrated the ‘Torque Kick Drift’ function. This function simulates the clutch kick action commonly used in rear-wheel-drive vehicles. To further enhance the driving experience, the Ioniq 5 N is equipped with ‘N Torque Distribution’, offering up to 11 levels of adjustability, and an electronic limited-slip differential.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Design

Compared to the standard model, the Ioniq 5 N boasts larger dimensions. The Ioniq 5 N is 40mm wider at the bottom and 80 mm longer overall. It also sits closer to the ground, approximately 20mm lower than the standard car. The Ioniq 5 N rides on 21-inch forged alloy wheels, wrapped in specially tuned Pirelli P-Zero tyres designed for electric performance cars. The exterior also features a lower bumper lip spoiler, active air flaps, and a functional mesh air curtain. Hyundai accentuates the contrasting black trim with N-exclusive Luminous Orange accents on the bumper, side skirts, and rear diffuser. 

Inside the Ioniq 5 N, Hyundai have equipped it with their newly designed N steering wheel, featuring the logo of the performance brand for the first time. The steering wheel incorporates 4 buttons for Drive Mode Select, N Grin Boost, and two N Custom buttons. The N Custom buttons allow drivers to personalise and assign their preferred customised drive modes to each button. Behind the steering wheel, there are paddles for controlling the e-shift and N Pedal functions. The Ioniq 5 N will offer a choice of 10 colors, including 2 exclusive options: N Performance Blue Matte and N Performance Blue.
