Honda City Hybrid Could Get ADAS - India Launch Soon | V3Cars
Honda Cars India are set to launch the City Hybrid soon. New reports suggest that the City Hybrid could get Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) with ‘Honda Sensing’. Honda Sensing is a collection of driver assistance and collision avoidance technology that Honda claims is intended to alert you to things you might overlook while driving. The Honda City Hybrid, which is currently on sale in Thailand, already features Honda Sensing.
Honda Sensing comes the following set of features:
- Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)
- Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
- Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)
- Auto High Beam (AHB)
Collision Mitigation Braking System, or CMBS, detects pedestrians or vehicles in front of the vehicle and can identify if a possible collision is about to occur. CMBS can autonomously apply the brake and slow the vehicle down if the driver fails to react on time. This not only reduces the chances of an accident but also reduces the effect of injuries in case of an unavoidable collision.
Adaptive cruise control lets the car automatically adjust its speed to maintain a defined distance from the vehicle in front of it while also meeting the user's desired speed as closely as possible.

Lane departure warning alerts the driver via vibration on the steering, in case the vehicle is not following the lanes properly. With the lane-keeping assist, the vehicle follows the lane itself with minimal input from the driver. It uses the front camera to understand the marking of lanes and keep the vehicle in between the markings. However, in a country like India where some roads have improper lane markings, this feature is unlikely to perform to its true potential.
Lastly, auto high beam, as the name suggests, switches to high beam in the dark and adjusts the intensity whenever a vehicle is approaching from the front accordingly. Currently, cars like the MG Astor, Mahindra XUV700, and MG Gloster offer ADAS capabilities in the mass-market segment in India.
The Honda City Hybrid will offer a strong hybrid powertrain to help improve fuel efficiency. It gets a 1.5L petrol engine which produces 98PS of power and 127Nm of torque. The engine is mated to two electric motors. While the first one acts as an integrated starter generator, the other one powers the engine. The power and torque output from the electric motor stand at 109PS and 253Nm respectively.

In India, Honda currently offer the City with two engine options – a 1.5L normal petrol and a 1.5L turbo diesel. The 1.5L normal petrol produces 121PS of power and 145Nm of torque. It is available with two transmission options – a 6-speed manual or a CVT. The 1.5L diesel engine, on the other hand, produces 100PS of power and 200Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.
Since hybrid powertrains and ADAS are expensive to develop and produce, we expect Honda to price the City Hybrid in the range of Rs. 18 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh ex-showroom. To improve its appeal, Honda could offer the City Hybrid in the RS trim. The Honda City with the RS trim in Thailand comes with a sporty body kit, black trim in place of chrome, a dark cabin, and a lip spoiler. We expect the Honda City Hybrid to be launched in India in July 2022.
