Honda Car India Likely To Discontinue 1.5L Diesel Engine Along With Ageing Products In Early 2023 | V3Cars

According to the latest rumours, Honda Car India are likely to pull the plug on their 1.5L turbo diesel engine along with 3 key products to make way for future products.

Honda Cars

Honda Car India currently offer the 1.5L turbo diesel engine in the WR-V, Amaze and City 5th-gen. As per the rumour, Honda do not find any benefit in making the 1.5L turbo diesel engine comply with upcoming Real Driving Emission (RDE) norms. Hence, the carmaker will pull the plug on its 1.5L turbo diesel engine and only offer the aforementioned models with petrol and hybrid powertrain options.

Old Products To Make Way For Newcomers

A couple of rumours also suggest that Honda will discontinue the WR-V, Jazz and 4th-gen City in India by early 2023. While the successor to the 4th-gen City is already in the market, the new-gen models of the Jazz and WR-V are now available in global markets. The WR-V, Jazz and 4th-gen City will make way for new sub-compact and compact SUVs.

Honda recently took the wraps off the 2023 WR-V crossover in Indonesia with a sporty design and powertrain options. We expect Honda to bring the WR-V to India as well, albeit with a couple of changes. The new-gen Jazz, on the other hand, may not make it here as the nameplate is no longer popular in the market, as evidenced by its low sales and diminishing market share.

More Hybrid Powertrains

With the discontinuation of the 1.5L turbo diesel engine, Honda are likely to offer more strong hybrid powertrains in India. The City 5th-gen is already available with a 1.5L strong hybrid petrol engine that surpasses the diesel engine in terms of fuel efficiency.

We expect Honda to launch a couple of SUVs with strong hybrid powertrains to take on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. While the first SUV will be a Hyundai Creta-rivalling offering, the other SUV is likely to be a Nexon-rivalling sub-compact SUV.
