In this December 2022 cars sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change in sales figures for each carmaker, segment and body style in India. December 2022 Full Sales Analysis

Brand-Wise December 2022 Car Sales - YoY Change

  • In terms of percentage, Citroen posted the best YoY improvement of over 3,700% because of the low numbers in December 2021. It is worth noting that Citroen is not yet a mass volume manufacturer in India.
  • Among the mass volume carmakers, Kia posted the best growth in December YoY comparison, with a 95% rise in sales.
  • Mahindra posted the second best YoY growth of around 62%.
  • The biggest losers were Nissan and Jeep with 27.42% and 16% decline, respectively, in YoY dispatch numbers in December.
  • Datsun as a brand stopped producing cars over the past year.

Brand-Wise December 2022 Car Sales - MoM Change

  • In terms of MoM change, most brands saw a decline in dispatches in December over November 2022. 
  • The 4 brands that saw a growth or remained strictly consistent in dispatch numbers as the previous month, are — Citroen, Honda, Skoda and Volkswagen.
  • Speaking of gainers, the top performing brand in terms of MoM comparison for the month of December was Volkswagen with 24% increase in dispatch, followed by Citroen with 11.5% growth.
  • Honda remained more or consistent with November’s dispatches in December with a nominal 0.16% growth in dispatch numbers.
  • Kia was the top losing brand with 58.23% decline in MoM dispatches in December compared to November.
  • Kia was followed by Hyundai with a 23.62% decline in dispatches in December over November.

Segment-Wise December 2022 Car Sales - YoY Change

  • In terms of YoY change, the D1-segment was the biggest gainer, posting a YoY growth of 45%
  • The D1-segment was followed by the C and B2-segments, with YoY growth of 38% and 11% in December 2022, respectively
  • In terms of YoY comparison, all segments witnessed growth except the A and B1-segment, which witnessed a decline of 31% and 7% on the YoY comparison analysis for the month of December

Segment-Wise December 2022 Car Sales - MoM Change

  • In terms of MoM comparison for the month of December, all the segments saw a decline in their sales figures
  • Among the falling segments, D2-segment was the top losing with 29% decline in the MoM comparison for December
  • A-segment and D1-segment saw the second highest MoM decline of all, of around 21% for each
  • The B2-segment saw a gain of 5% in terms of MoM change and was the top-gaining segment
  • C -segment dispatches saw the lowest decline in MoM comparison (6%)

  • Sedans witnessed the biggest YoY growth of roughly 38% in December 2022 compared to December 2021
  • The SUV was the best-selling body style in India. It was followed by hatchbacks, which suffered a 15% loss in sales in December 2022 compared to December 2021
