Citroen C3 Electric India Launch Confirmed For 2023 | V3Cars

While Citroen are gearing up to launch the C3 in the coming weeks, Mr. Carlos Tavares, the CEO of Stallintis, revealed future product plans for India. Citroen will kickstart its electric journey in the country with a C3-based small electric SUV. The upcoming EV will be based on Citroen’s CMP platform under its C-Cube programme. Citroen will launch the C3-based electric vehicle in 2023, followed by an electric family mover and an electric compact SUV.

The Citroen C3 will enjoy over 90% localisation and we expect the C3-based EV to enjoy a similar level of localisation. Mr. Tavares revealed that Citroen will manufacture most of the components for the EV at their facility in Chennai. However, the battery cells will be imported. Furthermore, Mr. Tavares stated that Citroen is actively looking for battery cell suppliers within India to reduce costs even further. But as things stand today, the battery cells will be imported during the initial stage.

Citroen are hoping to tap into the affordable car segment in India. We expect Citroen to price the C3 competitively thanks to the high degree of localisation. Similarly, Citroen want to tap into the affordable EV segment in India as well. Currently, the cheapest electric vehicle in the market is the Tata Tigor EV, which is priced from Rs. 12.49 lakh ex-showroom. Meanwhile, India’s number 1 carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, have hinted that their first electric vehicle will arrive in 2025. Hyundai, on the other hand, are developing heavily localised electric vehicles that are likely to o on sale in the next 2 to 3 years.

If Citroen can position and price their upcoming electric vehicles attractively, they could grab a large chunk of the Indian EV market. The success of the C3 electric will work as a stepping stone to future electric family mover and compact SUV from the brand. These EVs are likely to go up against premium electric vehicles such as the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona that are currently available in the market.
