Exclusive: MG Comet EV To Get Lifetime Battery Warranty | V3Cars

We recently came across a piece of collateral from JSW MG Motor India revealing that they will soon start offering lifetime warranty on the Comet EV’s high-voltage battery. The MG Windsor EV was the first one which got lifetime warranty, although the benefits are limited to the first owner of the car. It’s also worth noting that the first owner has to be an individual and not a company and the car has to be registered for personal use; not for commercial buyers. Similarly, we expect the Comet EV lifetime battery warranty conditions to also fall under these same conditions.

It’s difficult to imagine the first car owner driving the Comet for more than 1.2 lakh kilometres during the ownership. Moreover, the Comet is unlikely to end up in commercial use since it doesn’t have enough space in the back seat and for luggage. The only 2 kinds of buyers who may not be able to enjoy this lifetime battery warranty offer are:

  1. Rental use: It’s compact dimensions and low running costs makes it a fantastic choice to rent at a holiday destination. For this purpose, the company will have to have a commercial registration.
  2. Company registration: Many buyers also get a car in company name and use the employees can use the company car for running office errands. The super low total cost of ownership (TCO) of the Comet makes it a perfect choice for such use.

In both these cases, there’s a high probability that the people using the car may abuse the vehicle more than usual.

So far we haven’t received an official confirmation about the same. Until that happens, we have to assume that the Comet EV only comes with the usual, 8-year/1.2 lakh kilometre warranty. The entire car gets a warranty coverage of 3 years or 1.0 lakh kilometres. It also gets free 3-year roadside assistance from MG.

Why No Lifetime Battery Warranty On ZS EV?

First of all, both, the Windsor EV and the Comet EV, are made on electric car platforms. They don’t share the core chassis components with other petrol or diesel cars in MG’s portfolio. This is probably why MG use different battery chemistries with the Comet/Windsor and the Astor-based ZS EV. The India-spec ZS shares substantial portions of its platform with the Astor, which is a petrol engine car.

These conditions probably don’t allow them to use the same battery type in the EV-specific platforms and ICE-EV shared platforms. The brochures of the Comet and the Windsor, both specify that they use prismatic cells. Most likely, they also use LFP battery chemistry, which has a much longer life cycle. We have only seen prismatic geometry for battery cells used with LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) type battery packs. Such a mention is missing in the ZS EV’s brochure and product detail page.

Hence, the most expensive EV in MG’s portfolio isn’t likely to get lifetime battery warranty any time soon. However, if you want this features and can wait, then we expect MG to offer the new-generation ZS EV on a dedicated EV-spec platform, which it will share with the MG4 in their portfolio. With the new-gen ZS, we can expect the ZS to also get lifetime warranty on the high voltage battery.
