2022 Volkswagen Polo GTI India Launch Under Consideration | V3Cars
Volkswagen India are finally ceasing production of the current-gen Polo. While the German carmaker is planning to launch a special edition of the Polo to mark the end of production, there are also talks of bringing the 2022 Polo GTI via the CBU route. Currently, Volkswagen India do not have any plans to launch the sixth-gen Polo in the Indian market.
After the discontinuation of the current Polo, Volkswagen won’t have any product to fill the void in the premium hatchback segment. While there are no plans for introducing the sixth-gen Polo in India, Volkswagen could launch the 2022 Polo GTI to keep the Polo moniker alive in the country. Volkswagen recently announced the 2022 Polo GTI for international markets and it gets a host of changes over the earlier Polo GTI, which was on sale in India for a short time.

With the 2022 Polo, Volkswagen have dropped the 3-door model altogether. The regular models and the GTI now come in a 5-door format. The facelift brought a revised front end along with bigger, split LED tail lights. On the inside, the GTI offers all-black interiors with red inserts. Features include a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, touch-based climate control, and a fully-digital instrument cluster. The Volkswagen GTI now comes with a 2.0L turbo petrol engine whereas the earlier generation was offered with a 1.8L turbo petrol engine.
Talking about the powertrain, the 2.0L turbo petrol of the Polo GTI makes 207PS of power and 320Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission which channels power to front wheels. It does 0-100kmph in a claimed 6.5 seconds whereas the top speed is limited to 210kmph.

Volkswagen India will bring the 2022 Polo GTI via the CBU route, meaning it will be priced on the higher side due the various tax impositions on importing completely built units. The previous Polo GTI 2-door was priced at Rs. 25.65 lakh ex-showroom when launched in India back in 2016,. However, the price was lowered by up to Rs 6 lakh later due to slow sales and tax revisions. For the time being, Volkswagen India are focussing on freshly-baked products for the Indian market, such as the Taigun SUV and the upcoming Virtus sedan.
