Diesel-powered cars and SUVs were once all the rage in India. However, reduction in the price gap between petrol and diesel fuel and ever-tightening emission norms have led to a dip in the popularity of diesel cars and SUVs. Currently, diesel cars command a market share of 22%, which is a huge dip from the above 50% market share diesel passenger cars enjoyed in 2012-13.
In this article, we list out the diesel cars and SUVs that are priced under Rs. 10.0 lakh (ex-showroom) that you can buy in India currently.
1. Tata Altroz
The Altroz is currently the only diesel hatchback on sale in the country. It comes with a 1.5L turbo diesel engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. It produces 90PS of power at 4000rpm and 200Nm of torque between 1250rpm and 3000rpm. The XM Plus, XM Plus S, XT and XZ variants of the Altroz diesel are priced below Rs. 10 lakh (ex-showroom).
2. Kia Sonet
Kia offer the Sonet with a 1.5L turbo diesel engine and the base HTE variant is expected to cost 9.95 lakh (ex-showroom). The Sonet diesel comes with a 1.5L turbo diesel engine that produces 100PS of power at 4000rpm and 240Nm of torque between 1500rpm and 2750rpm. The base and mid variants come with a 6-speed manual transmission while the top variants also offer the option of a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

3. Mahindra Bolero
The Mahindra Bolero is the best-selling vehicle in rural India. The Bolero comes with a 1.5L turbo diesel engine that produces 75PS of power at 3600rpm and 210Nm of torque between 1600rpm and 2200rpm. It comes with a 5-speed manual transmission and Mahindra do not offer an automatic transmission option with the Bolero. The B4 and B6 variants of the Bolero retail under Rs. 10.0 lakh (ex-showroom).
4. Mahindra Bolero Neo
The Mahindra Bolero Neo is the only sub-4m SUV other than the Bolero that offers seating for up to 7 passengers. It comes with a 1.5L turbo diesel engine that produces 100PS of power at 3750rpm and 260Nm of torque between 1750rpm and 2650rpm. This engine is offered with a 5-speed manual transmission only. Currently, only the N4 variant of the Bolero Neo falls under the Rs. 10.0 lakh (ex-showroom) price bracket.
