What Are The Engine Specifications Of The 2020 MG Gloster vs Rivals? 

The Gloster’s lower variants come packed with 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine that offers 163PS of maximum power and 375Nm of peak torque. This engine is available only with 2WD drivetrain. When equipped with this engine, the Gloster’s power:weight and torque:weight ratios are almost at the bottom in its segment.

The Gloster’s top variants get powered by 2.0-litre diesel engine with 2 turbochargers along with 4WD drivetrain. This engine produces 218PS of maximum power and 480Nm of peak torque. In this case, the power:weight ratio of the Gloster is the best in the segment. Both the engine options get paired with only an 8-speed automatic transmission.

As the MG Gloster is a big SUV, we recommend that you choose the more powerful engine, with the on-demand 4WD capability, especially if this combination comes with a sensible price tag. The reason is very straightforward - such a large SUV without any off-road capability and performance is only a poser. MG hasn’t yet revealed the Gloster’s claimed fuel efficiency.

What Are The Dimensions Of The 2020 MG Gloster vs Rivals?

The Gloster is a large D2 segment SUV and has a length of almost 5m. Compared to the Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner, the Gloster’s length, width, height and wheelbase are bigger, but it has lesser ground clearance. The Endeavour and Fortuner come with maximum wheel size of 18-inches, while the Gloster offers only the larger 19-inch wheels.

MG Gloster Super Variant

The Gloster Super variant is priced at Rs 29.98 lakh. This is the entry-level variant of the Gloster and offers all the standard safety features apart from which there are also features like - side & curtain airbags, electronic stability program, hill start assist, driver fatigue reminder, automatic LED headlamps and rear parking camera.

This variant offers a long features list, and some of its key features include: height adjustable driver seat, 60:40 split 3rd row w/ recline, cruise control, multi drive modes,  tilt steering, front & rear armrest, electrically adjustable & foldable ORVMs, keyless entry with push-button start stop and rain sensing wipers.

The Gloster offers a 12.3 inch touchscreen infotainment system along with steering-mounted controls, but the base Super variant only gets a 6-speaker audio system along with this system. According to our internal data, the Sharp variant’s performance capability and additional features are worth more than its Rs 2.8 lakh additional asking price, so it is a sensible upgrade from both the lower variants.

MG Gloster Sharp variant vs Savvy Variant

The Gloster Savvy is Rs 1.30 lakh more expensive than the Sharp variant. 

The features that the Savvy variant gets over the Sharp variant are primarily driver assistance and safety related, such as forward collision warning -- which warns upon detecting an obstacle; auto emergency braking -- which automatically applies brakes upon sensing imminent collision in case driver response is late; lane departure warning, park assist and adaptive cruise control -- which helps in maintaining a constant safe distance between the car at the front and the Gloster on highways.

As per our internal data, these added features of the Gloster Savvy variant are worth the additional premium of Rs 1.30 lakh. Its safety features are useful and can mitigate the chances of collision.  

Verdict : Which Variant Of The 2020 MG Gloster Should You Buy?

Our top recommendation in the Gloster SUV range is the Sharp variant. This variant comes with the more powerful engine and 4WD setup, and it offers the best value compared to all the other variants. You can choose to buy this variant in either 6-seater or 7-seater configuration. 

The Gloster Savvy variant, which is placed above the Sharp and is the top-end variant, offers autonomous safety features that can prevent collision. Its park assist feature can help in parking this big SUV. However, we are unsure about the usefulness of the adaptive cruise control feature, considering our country’s highways and driving pattern.  As the Savvy variant justifies its extra premium for its additional features, we recommend this variant to those buyers who are more safety conscious and wish to be early-adopters of new technology. 

While we would not recommend the lesser powerful engine along with the 2WD setup, however, if you do wish to go for this powertrain, then you can buy the Smart variant. The Smart variant offers better value than the Super variant, and its feature-list is more befitting for a car that belongs to this segment.
