What Are The Pros And Cons Of Hyundai Verna?
The pros or advantages of Hyundai Verna are:
- Segment-exclusive features like hands-free boot unlock, front parking sensors, 5x seatbelt reminders, power driver seats
- Most ADAS features including some notable ones like safe exit, rear collision avoidance assistance, driver attention warning, adaptive cruise with stop-and-go traffic assist and blind spot collision avoidance assist
- Good road presence because of its length and width; the wide DRL and connected tail lamps further emphasise this width
- Fantastic fuel efficiency, especially with the turbo petrol engine despite being the most powerful engine in the segment with class-leading torque output
- Value pricing for almost all variants, especially for the turbo petrol-automatic powertrain
The Hyundai Verna has the following shortcomings or problems:
- The CVT automatic with the normal petrol engine is not available in the reasonably-loaded S variant
- Adaptive cruise control is not available with the normal petrol-automatic and turbo petrol-manual
- Base model doesn’t get safety features like the ESC, HSA, traction control and TPMS
- The low, 165mm ground clearance may concern some buyers especially since the Virtus and Slavia already offer SUV-like 179mm clearance
- Dual-clutch automatic transmissions are yet to establish themselves as reliable long-term partners (Also Read: Discontinued DCT Equipped Cars In India)
- Features you might miss in Verna: sunglass holder, auto wiper, split folding rear seat backs, puddle lamps, traction control, full-colour LCD instrument cluster, head-up display and 360-degree camera
What Is The Price Of 2023 Hyundai Verna Petrol Variants?
The new Hyundai Verna is available with 4 powertrains:
- 1.5L normal petrol with manual transmission
- 1.5L normal petrol with CVT automatic transmission
- 1.5L turbo petrol with manual transmission
- 1.5L turbo petrol with 7-speed DCT automatic transmission
All 4 of the variants of the Verna are available with the 1.5L normal petrol-manual powertrain. The other 3 powertrains are only available with the top 2 variants.
The normal petrol-manual range of the Verna costs between Rs. 10.90 lakh and Rs. 14.66 lakh (ex-showroom). The SX and SX (O) normal petrol-automatic variants cost Rs. 14.24 lakh and Rs. 16.20 lakh. These prices are Rs. 1.25 to Rs. 1.54 lakh higher than the comparable petrol-manual variants.
The top 2 variants with the turbo petrol-manual powertrain cost Rs. 14.84 lakh and Rs. 15.99 lakh. These prices are Rs. 1.85 lakh and Rs. 1.33 lakh higher than the comparable normal petrol-manual variants.
The turbo petrol-automatic variants cost Rs. 16.08 lakh and Rs. 17.38 lakh. Compared to the turbo petrol-manual, it’s Rs. 1.25 lakh to Rs. 1.39 lakh more expensive. If you’re only interested in the automatic transmission, then compared to the normal petrol-automatic, the turbo petrol engine is only Rs. 1.18 lakh pricier. This is a lot more reasonable than the price gaps between the respective base and 1.5L turbo petrol variants of the Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia.

The SX variant of the Verna is our top recommendation for normal petrol-manual and automatic buyers. If you are interested in the ADAS or more powerful turbo petrol engine, then you should consider upgrading to the higher SX (O) top model of the Verna. The upgrade to the turbo petrol over the normal petrol in the SX variant is not a suitable choice from a value standpoint.
2023 Hyundai Verna Petrol SX vs SX (O) Variant - Price, Feature Comparison
Just like the SX variant, the SX (O) variant of the 2023 Verna is also available with all 4 powertrain options. Compared to the lower SX variant, the SX (O)’s each powertrain carries a slightly different incremental cost.
The SX (O) petrol-manual costs Rs. 14.66 lakh while the automatic costs Rs. 1.54 lakh more with an ex-showroom price of Rs. 16.20 lakh. The SX (O) turbo petrol-manual and automatic cost Rs. 15.99 lakh and Rs. 17.38 lakh, respectively. Compared to the normal petrol-manual, the turbo petrol engine is Rs. 1.33 lakh pricier but the gap between normal petrol-automatic and turbo petrol-automatic is only Rs. 1.18 lakh.

Over the SX variant, the Verna top model offers additional features like:
- ADAS features
- Soft-touch dashboard
- Front ventilated seats
- Leather upholstery
- Rear windshield curtain
- Power driver seat
In the top variant, you may miss only power opening and closing boot lid. Otherwise, it’s very well loaded. It’s worth noting that the ADAS based features are also available with the turbo petrol-manual. But the valuable adaptive cruise control feature with stop-and-go traffic assist is only available with the turbo petrol-automatic powertrain.

If you’re interested in the turbo petrol engine, then the SX (O) variant is a great option. With the normal petrol-automatic powertrain, you don’t get the most useful adaptive cruise control feature. So, it may not feel like a complete package.
The turbo petrol-manual also doesn’t get these features. So, it’s better to stretch a little for the turbo petrol-automatic powertrain to enjoy the best performance and the feature-rich ADAS package.
To learn more about how Adaptive Cruise Control and other ADAS features work, you can watch the following video:
Which Variant Of The Hyundai Verna Petrol Should You Buy?
While the feature distribution of the Verna is quite complex, the decision is quite simple. If you’re interested in the Verna petrol-manual and on a tight budget, then the S variant is the minimum you should buy. If you can stretch your budget, then the SX earns our top recommendation.
If you’re interested in the turbo petrol engine, then you should buy the top model, which gets most of the ADAS features as well. However, if you can stretch for the automatic and are comfortable with it, then the Verna turbo offers the best ownership experience and value for money with the turbo petrol-automatic powertrain only.

With the automatic transmission also, it’s a simple decision. If you want the Verna’s normal petrol engine, then the SX is our top recommendation. With the turbo petrol engine, the top-spec SX (O) is a far better option as it offers the complete suite of ADAS features.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Hyundai Verna Petrol?
The Verna carries over the 1.5L normal petrol engine with the manual as well as CVT automatic transmission. It makes the same 115PS of power and 144Nm of torque as before. But, compared to the older Verna, it’s more fuel efficient and this engine promises a mileage of 18.6kmpl with the manual and 19.60kmpl with the automatic transmission.
The most notable thing about the 2023 Verna is its new 1.5L turbo petrol engine. With 160PS of power and 253Nm of torque, it has performance figures. Only the Honda City hybrid matches the Verna turbo’s torque output of 253Nm.
Despite these high performance figures, this engine is more fuel efficient than the normal petrol and has near-class-leading mileage figures — for a non-hybrid petrol engine. With the manual transmission, the Verna turbo petrol has a claimed mileage figure of 20kmpl and with the dual-clutch automatic, it claims to deliver 20.60kmpl. If you choose a car primarily based on the engine, then the new-generation Verna is an easy choice as you get best-in-class performance along with class-leading mileage figures.
Only the City hybrid beats the Verna in terms of mileage figures but its prohibitively high price makes it difficult to recommend over the Verna turbo. Moreover, with the Verna turbo, you don’t need to compromise on boot space as the City hybrid has a much smaller cargo volume.

What Are The Dimensions Of The New Hyundai Verna?
Just like the other cars in its class, the new Verna is a C2-segment car and measures 4535mm long with a width of 1765mm. It’s not the longest car in the segment, but it’s the widest. The Verna also has the biggest boot space of 528 litres. The ground clearance details of the Verna aren’t available at the time of publishing this article but we expect it to be around 165mm like most hatchbacks and sedans in India. If you want a sedan with high ground clearance, then the Slavia and Virtus are your best options as they offer 179mm of SUV-like clearance.
